Shadow Touched in Midgard | World Anvil

Shadow Touched

Darkness and fear are the only things that guide shadow touched. As the shadow consumes them, they become a gaunt caricature of their former selves, emptied of life and color.

Becoming Shadow Touched

There are three main ways individuals become shadow touched in Midgard. The first is to spend too much time in the Shadow Roads and be corrupted by it slowly. The second way is to use shadow magic and be corrupted by its power. The third is to be transformed into one by a powerful shadow creature.

Prerequisites

Ability Scores: Wisdom 13
Roleplay: Shadow touched begin to slowly lose their emotions and empathy. The more you progress as a shadow touched the less you begin to care about anything or anyone. You still have goals and ambitions however you appear less enthusiastic about them. Some of your abilities require your target to make a saving throw to resist their effects.
The saving throw DC is calculated as follows:
Transformation Save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier

Transformation level 1

Starting at 1st level, you gain all the following Transformation Boons and this level’s Transformation Flaw.

Transformation Boon: Eerie Perception

You gain darkvision to a range of 60 ft. If you already have darkvision, the range of your darkvision increases by 30 ft. instead.

Transformation Boon: One With Shadow

While in darkness or an area thats heavily obscured, you gain a +4 to Perception and Stealth checks.

Transformation Flaw: Sunlight Sensitivity

Your eye color fades to a dull gray and your eyes overreact to light. While in sunlight, you have disadvantage on Attack rolls, as well as on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight.

Transformation Level 2

Transformation Boon: Emptiness of Shadow

The darkness in your soul can draw in the life force of your allies. Once per long rest when you take damage, you can divide the damage (up to a maximum of half) between you and an ally within 30 ft. of you. Your ally may attempt a Constitution saving throw to resist this effect.

Transformation Boon: Frightful

Fear lingers in your mind, and you can spread it to others. You gain expertise in Intimidation and the DC for any effect that you use that causes a creature to become Frightened increases by 2.

Transformation Boon: Wretched Pain

Inflicting pain is one of the sensations that still stirs you. Whenever you deal weapon damage to a creature with an attack that had advantage, you can choose to inflict a painful wound. The target must succeed a Constitution saving throw, on a failure the damage you do reduces that creatures maximum hit points until their next long rest.

Transformation Flaw: Shadow Stained

Your hair and skin loses its color and your eyes fully become blackened. Any gear you carry for more than 24 hours becomes faded and time worn. This gear is worth only half the original amount that it was. Additionally you lose any proficiency in Persuasion and cant add your Charisma bonus to Persuasion checks.

Transformation Level 3

If you take damage, this feature ceases to function until the start of your next turn. This feature is suppressed while you are Incapacitated, Restrained, or otherwise unable to move.

Transformation Boon: Regretful Gaze

Your gaze carries your regret for wasted potential. As an action target a creature that can see you within 30 ft. They must make a Wisdom saving throw, on a failure they are frightened of you for 1 minute and may repeat this save at the end of each of their turns. On a success they are immune to Regretful Gaze for 24 hours.

Transformation Boon: Weaver of Lies

Using shadows drawn from the Shadow Road, you can spin falsehoods into convincing imitations of reality. You can cast Disguise Self, Minor Illusion, and Major Image each once per long rest.

Transformation Flaw: Despondent

Joy and excitement have become foreign to you, leaving pain the only sensation of much interest. You cannot benefit from Inspiration or the Help action and you cannot perform the Help action. If you attempt to cast a spell or ability that would grant a beneficial effect to an ally while a hostile creature is present, you must pass a Charisma save using your Transformation save DC. If you fail you cannot use that ability or spell and must instead focus on harming the hostile creature.

Transformation Level 4

Until the end of your next turn you gain a +2 to all attack rolls, saving throws, and ability checks.

Transformation Boon: Touch of Ruin

You are infused with the ruin of the Shadow Roads. As an action you can make a special unarmed attack against a creature, if the attack hits the creature takes 4d10 necrotic damage, and the target's Strength score is reduced by 1d4. The target dies if this reduces its Strength to 0. Otherwise, the reduction lasts until the target finishes a short or long rest. If a non-evil humanoid dies from this attack, a new shadow rises from the corpse immediately and lasts for 1 minute. You may use this ability a number of times equal to your proficiency bonus.
