Glyssian Ethnicity in Microsha | World Anvil

Glyssian

The term "Glyssian" refers to the people who live on the surface or, more accurately, are not ethnically Microshan. It is an umbrella term for the many ethnic groups and cultures that originated from the surface of the earth.   The word is not one that Microshans gave to those from the surface. It is what "Glyssians" named themselves once they learned the Microshan language, appropriating the word "glyssi" (which means "terrible light" or "blinding light"). While the word was mistranslated at first, the word stuck.   While "Glyssian" can be a neutral term, it can also be used as an insult, insinuating an "otherness" or an "entitlement attitude" that is found in many Glyssians from the surface. Often, this insult usage is thrown at Microshans who have spent too much time on the surface and come back to Microsha with admiration, sympathy, knowledge to share, etc.   Notably, there are some Glyssians who have earned a kind of "local" status, affectionately called "maril" or "adopted". These are non-Microshans who may have grown up in Microsha, or those who have spent most of their lives in Microsha that they have been accepted into the local population as one of their own. This is not a widely used term, as it takes a lot to be given the privilege. Some maril in canon are Algar Harte and Atyr, both of whom spent nearly their entire lives in Microshan communities and have more in common with Microshans than Glyssians.
