Jaeger Tarvy

Sir Jaeger Tarvy

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Lithe, fit, and healthy. Jaeger has twinges of agony and occasional pain in his left elbow and across the left side of his chest. A big eater, a lifetime in the field or in seedy back alleys has left Jaeger happier with rustic food than rich and fancy produce. The sole exception is wine. Tarvy is an energetic person, and his walking pace is both fast and exuberant.

Physical quirks

Part of Tarvy’s strange condition is a lack of need for sleep, strictly speaking. When he does he almost always suffers from nightmares, but he can trance and achieve the same goal.

Mental characteristics

Education

Jaeger was educated in the state-sponsored style of the Empire. That meant harsh and regimented structure, military training, and a focus on patriotism that bordered on brainwashing. Since then his education came in the Inquisition, the Father’s Temple, and on the road. Beyond those lessons on history, mathematics, linguistics, etc., Tarvy pursued what interested him and what he found beautiful or useful.

Employment

Jaeger lives the life of an itinerant wanderer. Occasional bounty hunter, occasional sellsword, and occasional enforcer, he takes on any job that remains above the boundaries of morality whilst simultaneously keeping him in wine and lodgings.

Mental Trauma

Over the years Tarvy’s depression and trauma have become deeply ingrained, to the point where he has almost ‘come out the other end’. He coped with his extended lifespan, the death of his lover, the death of his comrades, and the death of his faith by developing an attitude of nihilism: only faith matters and even that just barely. He maintains a happy and chipper attitude because he doesn’t give anything more than cursory attention to anything other than his own pleasure.

Intellectual Characteristics

A reasonably intelligent man, Jaeger has learnt to ignore and gloss over the parts of the world he does not understand, or the parts that bore him. Where others engage with the intricacies and inner workings of science and nature, he would prefer less analysis and more enjoyment.   On one level Jaeger is well aware of his own physical and mental qualities. On the other he has crippling survivor’s guilt and has internalised a great deal of self-hatred. His internal (unheard) monologue would be: ‘You’re the best at what you do… but it hasn’t helped you none. You’re still a failure.’

Morality & Philosophy

Tarvy’s value system is a jumbled mess bastardized across decades of life. He retains biases and opinions from his past as an Imperial zealot, he retains a faith and tolerance impressed upon him by the Father’s Temple, and he has gained a hard-won love of, and respect for, all life. All of this is overlaid by a thick serving of nihilism of course; if Jaeger could verbalise his personal values they would be: ‘Live and let live. Everyone, regardless of background, is equally dead in the end’.

Taboos

Jaeger still holds internalised resentments against non-humans, justifying them by referring to his own nasty treatment since the Greynight. He often refuses to drink from the same cup as one of the ‘lesser races’ or sleep in a bed they might have slept in – sometimes without even realising the reason why. Despite this apparent human-centric attitude, he despises the Beskus Empire and those who support it.

Personality Characteristics

Vices & Personality flaws

A high-functioning alcoholic, Jaeger’s worst traits (aggression, surliness, or alternatively an annoyingly cloying exuberance) emerge when sober. Substance abuse is a serious problem for him, but one that he has lived with for many years.

Personality Quirks

Jaeger can and will talk the back legs off a donkey. He is friendly, cocky, brash, and full of himself – overly so. It is a veneer over a deep well of nihilism and pain.

Social

Religious Views

The Father’s duality is inherently fair, because law and justice are equal and tolerant of all. Despite all evidence to the contrary Jaeger genuinely believes that equality and kindness are crucial to the human condition.

Social Aptitude

Jaeger’s greatest skills are people-related. Whether he chooses to apply those skills is another factor – in many ways he is an unthinking, unfeeling bull in a china shop when it comes to the thoughts and emotions of others. This is heavily coloured by his views on death, which lead to him simultaneously valuing personal relationships, and showing no grief at their loss.

Hobbies & Pets

The love of Tarvy’s life was a keen poet and writer, a pursuit he always scorned. When he first joined the Father’s Temple, Jaeger took up the hobby as a way to express his tortured emotions and hopefully find some solace. It has become a constant balm to his wounded psyche. Otherwise his hobbies include drinking and carousing.

Speech

Gregarious, outgoing, and a little brash/arrogant. Jaeger tends to have a friendly and welcoming register, as he seeks to make friends first. Occasionally, when furious, his accent slips.

A scarred man with a dark past. Trying to make amends to the world.
