Sand Fruit

The Sand Fruit is a deep underground dwelling plant found in the deserts of Orongo. The plant lives underground deep below the sand, and slowly pushes up small fruit buds to the surface.   The fruit itself is usually yellowish in color, but when it dries out it seems to shift to the color of the sand around it.   The fruit when filled with fluid in it is not only bitter and vile tasting, but can cause nausea and vomiting.   It must fully dried out in the desert sun, and then it can be cracked open easily. Inside are a number of seeds as well as fibers.   The fiber can be used to start fires easily.   The dried fruit husk can be painted as decoration. It's far too brittle to be used to hold anything.   Seeds from the Sand Fruit can be soaked in water and dried out a second time to remove the toxins inside it. Afterwards they are a crunchy treat.   Taste has been described as a very faint chalky-wood taste.   If they are roasted after drying a second time the real flavor comes out tasting a bit like nutty wood.   The roasted seeds can be ground up and mixed with oil and salt to make a spread.     Dream Walkers are said to be able to eat the fruit in it's raw form and can use it to relax and delve into sleep easier.
