Mishap with a spell to improve food production caused famine in the southern part of Eisilfel and ultimately greatly increased tenstions between the two haves of the continent.

In 698 PD, in an attempt to increase the speed at which the northern part of Eisilfel could produce food for it's population, they used magic and there was a pretty significant mishap.   The mishap not only made the attempt unsucessful but caused a several month long eclipse which hid the sun plenty long enough to kill off all the southern crops. Lucky for the Laidencross, they had recently harvested their crops and so were much less affected by the disaster.   The northern government thought they could fix the problem they had created, much faster than they could and this ultimately led to major tensions between the Laidencross Emprie and the Orndoth Domain.
