Wintertown

A town reborn into a city.   Despite the name continuing to be used, Wintertown has now engulfed the name and formed into the newest City of the Seven Kingdoms. Now the second city of the North.   It's location is alongside the regional capital of Winterfell, the seat of House Stark and the Monarchs Throne of the North. Chosen as such to ensure the the Kings and Queens of the North have their own city and the benefits of that.   The increase in size of the town has been both planned and come around naturally and it has lead to some unique aspects of the city.   Queen Lyanna and her two Hands wanted to address the major issue of the Kingdom of the North. It's size and the lack of movement. They decided upon improving the Road structure of the North starting from the existing Kingsroad and adding in several others. From the Stoney Road, The Wolf's Road, The Dreadway and the Gifted Road. The aim is to impove the transport between the major Keeps of the Kingdom and White Harbour but this also included Wintertown directly having access to the Kingsroad, the Stoney Road and the Wolf's Road. Improving trade to and from the City acting as a hub from White Harbour into the rest of the North.   Around this time was also the formation and the structuring of the Winter Knights and the Headquarters of the Order was chosen as Wintertown. This brought in a number of new population to the Town as well as new services being required. Which also brought in other people to help serve the order. It was also decided that the order would honour the First Sword of Winter, named posthumously, Jon Snow pictured alongside Ghost and beneath a Stone Carving of a Weirwood Tree. This beings the first man created depiction of the Old Gods it has become a Hub for their followers with some making Pilgrimages to the Statue.   It means that despite the planned structure of the new City it has already evolved with the times. The wall especially, first circular now irregular in nature and joined to the existing fortifications of Winterfell. Indeed now it is unclear where the Keep ends and the city begins.   There are 5 key provinces of the City and they are:
  • The Winterhold
    • Headquarters of the Winter Knights and houses the Winter Wolves who live within the City. Surrounded by stables and training yards. The city is almost built around the Keep.
  • The Canvas Market
    • Perhaps the most odd province of the City. In its early days of growth some merchants began to sell wares. Due to the Near constant snowfall they sought to seek shelter. These came in the form of Leather or Sheepskin tents that grew in number until now they are all collected and together. A city of tents within a city.
  • Winter's Rest (Formerly Foreigners Street)
    • Due to the trade deals and ties with the EETC and the positioning of the Road structure of the North traders from Essos began to form their own stores in the city. Locals, not known for their tact named it Foreigners Street. Queen Lyanna and her Hands acted quickly. Setting up local businesses alongside them such as blacksmiths, Inns and Public Houses and formally named the area Winters Rest. Becoming what we know now.
  • The Hearthhouses
    • Wintertown has a long history of allowing smallfolk into its care during the Winter. This has been expanded to allow even more people safety in tough times. With simple, reliable and permanent longhouses built to house them. They are alongside the stables and training grounds of the Winter Wolves who also take charge of their care during the Winter.
  • Stoneheart Memorial
    • As explained before Queen Lyanna and her Hands dedicated a Statue to the First Sword of Winter, Jon Snow. This has exploded to be a symbolic Holy Site for the Old Gods with many traveling far to perform a pilgrimage to the City. The Winter Wolves are also seen all over here with the more zealous Knights deciding to serve as Priests of sort in their own time.

These Provinces form the greater Wintertown. Reborn from a combination of luck, destiny and well made plans to form a proper Castle Town. A capital City for the Kingdom and a hub for the whole North.   Now, the city has its own Flag and Sigil. A mayor, chosen by the Queen and a loyal force of Winter Wolves ruled by the Warden of Winterfell to form a well defended and structured City ever-growing against the Odds.

Gates of Wintertown

  • The Gate of Kings
    • The First Gate built. Joins southward onto the Kingsroad and follows the naming structure already given. The Grandest of all the Gates designed to show the new north to those coming from the South. More flamboyant and with the times.
  • The Den Gate
    • Heads South-Eastward towards White Harbour and joins to the province of Winter's Rest. The Den Gate has a rich ornate design with inspiration taken from Pentos. The name comes from the old Keep of the Starks, The Wolf's Den which is alongside White Harbour.
  • The Shieldmaidens Gate
    • Connects to the Stoney Road and heads West towards the Stoney Shore. The most simple of designs. Traditionally Northern and rigid. It's name honours Maria Mormont and the work she has done for the Kingdom and the City.
  • The Last Gate
    • The Last Gate

Roads of the North

  • The Kingsroad
    • Now split into two which connects to Wintertown via the North and South of the City. Uses the same structure of the original design with the main improvement being a new section that connects to Last Heart. This Northern half has earned the Nickname of "The Last Road" by the smallfolk.
  • The Stoney Road
    • A whole new segment that leads Westward out of Wintertown and ends at Deepwood Motte. Name taken from the area it leads to, the Stoneyshore
  • The Wolf's Road
    • A vast upgrade on the pervious existing road. This segment connects White Harbour to Wintertown. Establishing a connection between the Norths two cities.
  • Dreaded Road
    • The largest new section of Road that establishes an eastern highway that rivals the Kingsroad on the eastern side. It links White Harbour, The Dreadfort (for which it takes its name) and Karhold. There are also two smaller segments from the Dreadfort and Karhold that lead to Last Hearth.
