Hugh

High Septon New Vale Hugh (a.k.a. High Hugh)

Personality

Hugh is a devoted follower of the Faith. While he considers himself humble, he holds a very large pride about himself and his role. He is impeccably direct and tedious.

History

Born and raised an orphan within the hallowed halls of the septs, Hugh was shaped by incense, prayer, and the stern hands of the devout. He gave himself to the Faith from a young age, heart and soul bound to the will of the Seven.   In his youth, he left the orphanage behind and took up the humble mantle of a wandering septon. His path led him through the high, wind-bitten mountains of the Vale, where scattered hamlets clung to crags and cliffs like moss to stone. These villages were too small to warrant their own septs, and so he walked among them—half a hundred in all—offering the blessings of the Faith: naming babes, marrying lovers, forgiving sins, and singing the final prayers over the dead.   But when the Vale fell to conquest and the banners of war shadowed its peaks, Hugh turned his eyes eastward. He departed his homeland, crossing into lands where the light of the Seven was faint and unwelcome.   There, in the grim and distant reaches of Darkwater Valley, few dared to speak the names of the gods of Westeros. Fewer still dared to serve them. But in that spiritual void, Hugh's star rose swiftly. With fire in his voice and the weight of Faith in his hands, he became the most revered voice of the Seven not only in Darkwater, but perhaps in all of Essos.   The Valemen, exiled or scattered, received him with reverence. Some rites—blessings, burials, the naming of the innocent—had long cried out for a septon's hand. Others, such as the ordination of knights, could not be performed at all without one.   Two years passed in exile. Then, with the blessing of the gathered clergy of Darkwater Valley, Hugh proclaimed himself High Septon of the New Vale. His claim, bold as it was, found weight when it was formally ratified by the Princess of the Valley herself, upon hearing word of his deeds at Darkbridge.
