Dread Silk

While the name is suggestive of something sinister, the name Dread Silk is a shortening of Dread Wastes Silk, a hostile region in Santhresh that follows the Father's Spine. (Even the Dread Wastes are a misleading title. They're supposedly the home of the Dread Father, a common used term for the Wraakling god by outsiders.) of Where the desert meets the mountain there is a variety of carved caverns. Its here that the Dead Silk is made. A small amount can take years to make, and its unique quality is highly sought after.

Properties

Material Characteristics

Dread Silk is delicate to the touch, soft and flexible. It takes color easily, and is well know to hold water. In the desert this is valuable, but aside from this, Dread Silk is mildly luminescent in darkness. It glows with a dim, pale green light.

Geology & Geography

Brightworms are found exclusively in caves along the Father's Spine, in the Dread Wastes. Rumor suggests they dwell only in crystal caves, but this isn't true. The Nuus clan has build a farm of bright worms within these caves.

Origin & Source

Dread Silk is spun from the Brightworms found in the caves in the Father's Spine, within the Dread Wastes. Cocoons from pupating Brightworms are collected, spun together, and make into cloth.

History & Usage

Everyday use

Because of the rarity of the material, an item of clothing made of Dread Silk is basically impossible. It is typically woven into fine clothing in ribbons or patterns as an accent. Within Santhresh, it is more commonly seen on members of the Nuus clan, typically in a long, thing ribbon coiled into their hair.

Cultural Significance and Usage

Members of the Nuus clan are not considered adults until they've woven their first ribbon of Dread Silk. This ribbon stays with them for the rest of their lives. To lose it is highly shameful.

Distribution

Trade & Market

This item is sold exclusively by Wraakling of the Nuus clan. Its extremely time consuming, and rare, making it a premium price and a luxury item.
