Memory of Light

An indeterminate length of time ago, an event ravaged Maverot. The nature of the event has been forgotten; only the name remains: The Starvation. At the culmination of this event, all light in Maverot vanished. The world exists now in eternal, supernatural darkness. Both mundane and magical sources of light struggle to produce even the faintest of illumination. Only by building enormous bonfires can enough mundane light be generated to see by, and only magic of the power and intensity of that used to command the earth to quake or storms to gather can create light that has any effect on the darkness at all.   The only respite in this infinite blackness is the Memory of Light. Life follows a strange course on Maverot. Those who die awaken somewhere else on the world at a seemingly random interval. The process is intensely stressful and results in progressive memory loss each time it is experienced. Most would freely exchange memories for the opportunity to cheat death, but the one exception is the Memory of Light; none in Maverot wish to sacrifice this memory. Those who can recall a time before the Starvation when light shined on Maverot, who can conjure - however hazy - the image of sunlight by day and starlight by night, can cause lights near them to shed their radiance in a somewhat normal fashion. Few such people remain. Death has claimed the memory from all but a handful, and even they have nearly forgotten. Even so, their monopoly on light grants them broad authority and many followers.

Manifestation

Maverot is cloaked in oppressive, impenetrable gloom. Though even a match-flame can be seen at close distance, it does not cast its radiance at all; it sits as a tiny, lonely speck of light for a brief moment before being swallowed by the darkness. Exceptionally large sources of mundane light, such as from a pyre or bonfire, illuminate with the strength of a normal campfire. Magical light is similarly affected. Spells that would normally last for hours last for minutes instead, and fail to reveal even the vaguest of details in the darkness unless an incredible amount of magical energy is poured into them.
