Mavala

Welcome to Mavala, a land of floating islands surrounding inner oceans, connected by mysterious railways. Little is known of how Mavala came to be, but what is almost universally agreed upon is Mavala was created by a hyper-intelligent mortal race, known as The Progenitors, who have since vanished, leaving only their works and their clockwork constructs with maintain them. Such works include The Railway, an anomalous series of trains that can transport people and cargo to and from each island, which play a huge role in the economy and society of Mavala's many countries, as they are one of the only ways of travelling from island to island.   Each train, which floats across the star-lit sky on invisible tracks, stops at The Core, a dizzying place that is tightly guarded beyond its train network, and while little is known of The Core, it is believed to house artefacts of dizzying power, and perhaps the secret history of Mavala. However, almost all expeditions end in failure. Whether the Gods were there for Mavala's creation, whether or not the Progenitors are their creation, or perhaps even vice-versa, is not known, but the Gods yet influence this world, artificial as it may be.   Each island is its own continent, split into many countries, and is surrounded by space, not ocean. Each continent has a different barrier between it and the void: Villgrand has a towering wall of ice, Wahkatan a seemingly insurmountable wall of magma, Sih-Fah-Dao, a towering stone bastion, and Zillarlo, a wall of thorned roots and bark. These walls often form their own ecosystems, though past them lies naught but oblivion and the many distant stars. Besides it's stark, artificial nature, Mavala is a world of bountiful resources, of sprawling cities and quaint towns. It is also a world of prowling dangers, from faceless terrors from vaults deep beneath the earth, to extra-planar invaders, to the classical tyranical dragons.
