Session 12: Seaton & Saltmarsh Report

General Summary

Party goes to the Black Demon. Melody tries to con a merchant - who turns out to be Aubreck Jr. - while Virion talks with his dad. Melody calls Mystan Virion's lover, making Anthon blush and pissed. When Virion goes to purchase rooms, Rodrigo offers to house them at the Sylvenne estate "your mother would love the company" but Virion declines, and Musa helps get them "prior reservations" with a conspiratorial wink. Melody buys rounds for everyone but Rodrigo bc he left the silverstand for the fur trade.

Magical dick measuring contest. They go to bed, but first Virion talks with the "non-disruptive" members of the party (i.e. not Melody). Virion discusses the Captain's Log, and what exactly to do about it. They decide to bring the log to Solmor first, and maybe Drallion.

After a night's rest, the party returns to the Drallion estate and gets their money, all in platinum pieces. Melody says she will stay in Seaton for a few days, and they go their separate ways. As they're leaving, Melody gives a Message spell, saying "send my regards to Kiara" to Virion. Virion turns beat red and is angered, but leaves

Except Melody sticks behind to talk with Aubreck, and Virion doubles back to confront Melody on why she took the book. He asks her why she did it, and she said she was angry; he's an elven noble and he sold them out to the empire! Virion retorts that he was 15, and that she still looked through his things and lorded blackmail over him! Their shouting match escalates and becomes passionate. Melody is grief-stricken and lashing out, Virion is sick of her insults and lack of tact. He then confronts her on why she returned, and Melody pulls out her copy of the Captain's Log. She asks why it's okay for him to lie but not her, and he explains it's to keep them all safe, he's navigating a delicate political situation; he doesn't trust Solmor but he's neutral so he must be kept in power. She retorts with electoral fraud.

They agree to have Melody give Aubreck Sr. the book in a day's time, unless a Sending spell instructs her to do otherwise. She then gives Virion the copy of his journal back, and he destroys it.

The other three return to Saltmarsh, and see it's plastered with posters. Virion and Fishcod went to the Solmor House and gave the captain's log to Anders. Anders and Skerrin read over it, and were horrified by the fate of the crew. Anders said he wanted it because lost ships have always been an "idle curiosity" and he has interests in the southern trade. Anders agreed, however, to return the log to Virion after creating a copy so that the log could be given to Aubreck Drallion Senior.

Melody, meanwhile, got the go-ahead from Mystan's Sending to give her copy of the log's end to Aubreck - but she added the condition he give her his totem pole, which he bought at an auction. It was, apparently, from a prominent noble family of Old Harbor. Aubreck agreed to these terms and was also horrified by the jounral, and the totem was sent to Ferrin Kastilar as per Melody's request.

Back in Saltmarsh, Mystan headed to the Faithful Quartermasters of Ithaqua and set up some brokering of a magic item - specifcally an Amulet of the Devout - with Captain Xendros. She agreed, and at a 50gp/week upfront fee, she has begun to reach out to her contacts and seek for such an Amulet. Returning to Seaton, Melody headed to jail and sought an audience with Gellan Primewater. She informed him of the Shakeshaft setup, and he immediately accused Eliander. When pressed on who might want to hurt him that wasn't on the council, he could think of nobody - except perhaps "Pedro Sanchez" and "The One We Do Not Speak Of" (Keledek the Unspoken), who may have had some reason to try and set him up. He routinely denied any charges and said all his criminal activity was "alleged".

Fishcod, having nothing to do in either town, returned to their now-traditional stomping grounds within the Drowned Forest. There they were protected from the strange mushrooms and demonic creatures - but not the oozes. One attacked them, and they annihilated it with their fire magic. However, this burned some spores and caused them to understand and speak all languages. Admist that decaying forest, they understood the languages of the trees and the spores and the water and the grass and the animals and the demons and all of it. In this immense awareness, Zyg appeared and pleaded with Fishcod to leave their Matron, whom neither Zyg nor Fishcod named (but described as a "Mistress of Mushrooms" and a "Queen of Rot"), but Fishcod refused. Zyg tried to explain how She wants to annihilate the world, She is a cruel perversion of life and death, She would make all existence an eternally-decaying myceal network. Fishcod said they did not care; She gave them a new life, She helped them, and they are bound to Her. They could care less if they join Her immense network, they will probably love it then. They are bound, and Loyalty is important to Fishcod. Furthermore, the two people are in a stronghold of Her power; even if Fishcod wanted to leave, they could not do so here.

Zyg left, and soon all the fungi and spores spoke all at once. She rewarded Fishcod's loyalty, promised them a special place within Her remade world. She then finally instructed Fishcod that, when they are in a temple on an island (they hate the idea of being on an island), they must find a decanter and bring it to Her.

Finally, Captain Fireborn approached Virion, requesting that as he goes to request troops from Burle, he give a letter requesting aid from the Empire to Kiara Shadowbreaker. Specifically, he and Guildmaster Tomas are working on a project to build a lighthouse and a forward operating base on a nearby island. They require naval forces appropriate for an amphibious assault, rather than Seaton's anti-piracy navy. Virion makes the trek to Burle and, after delivering the letter and having a very awkward conversation with his former lover Castellion Shadowbreaker, secures the promise of a contingent of ex-marines from the Burle barracks to help with the assault.
