Master-at-Arms

On Sky Ships, the Master-at-Arms is essentially responsible for violence. They train the crew in fighting, and are the first to attack if a peaceful resolution is too costly an option. For their willingness to spill blood, they are often treated with contempt.
This contempt comes from the view that life is sacred. In a world that slowly loses resources over the years, people may not pay attention to overall decay, but clear loss is still unwelcome. Even Sky Pirates will normally only demand surrender and not aim to kill. But when the Master-at-Arms leads a charge, it is to kill. As such, they are feared and despised.
Most Master-at-Arms are military veterans, trained in multiple forms of combat, who decided to become Skyfarers after their retirement. While often still holding loyalty to their home country, they are now free of chains and sail the winds. And they may be looked down on for their choices, but their crews are glad to have them.
