Element Zero
Element zero (often abbreviated to "eezo") is a substance which produces dark energy when an electrical current is passed through it. This dark energy in turn creates mass effect fields, which raise or lower the mass of an object within them; the mass effect, harnessed by element zero cores, is the cornerstone of modern spaceflight technology, and is utilized in countless other applications.

Raw element zero appears as a glowing blue crystalline mineral; the strength and concentration of which can vary from a baby blue coloration to a deep blue, almost indigo color.
Processed element zero often appears as a 'slurry' of mostly blue-glowing magma before being further refined to be used in other applications.

Physical & Chemical Properties
Element zero emits trace radiation and dark energies when unprocessed, but can, in high concentrations, manifest "biotic ghosts" of dark energy particles in the environment around the rich deposits. Eezo emits virtually no heat, and is often room temperature to the touch, mimicking the environmental conditions the deposit is found in.
Origin & Source
Theorized to have formed when solid matter is exposed to the energy release of a supernova, eezo is rare, and because of this and its incredible utility is among the most sought-after substances in the galaxy.
History & Usage
Discovery
Element zero is first considered to have been discovered by the Asari. Their homeworld of Thessia is naturally rich in element zero, and its latent energies resulted in most native life (including the asari themselves) to be natural biotics.
