Chlothar Jäger
Born to a woodworker in a town near Spad, the capital of Darbenheim, Chlothar is the third of three children. His only surviving sibling is a sister, Edelgard, who is a few years older.
His mother died of disease when he was quite young, and he does not remember her. When he was 12, his father, Hrodulf, was killed by neighbors who believed him to be a thief. His sister and he were raised by his father's brother, Lanzo.
Lanzo had his own young family and could not adequately maintain his brother's children, so he married off Edelgard and sent Chlothar off to study with Hugo in Spad. Hugo was a learned man who was looking for an apprentice.
Chlothar was precocious enough to earn favor with his teacher. At the age of 22, Hugo decided he should travel to Greifstadt in Markwald to find a book by Gunter the Great. Gunter died about 70 years ago, and was Hugo's teacher's teacher. The book, Clavis Arcana - the Secret Key, is Gunter's principia. Without it, it is difficult to understand his other writings.
Like many a docent before him, Clothar made his way to Greifswald to see if he can learn more about him. The ducal family has turned away all seekers after supposed secrets as idlers, but perhaps the Totentanz has changed things.
Clothar has somehow met this weird exiled noble, Klein (who seems like he's not entirely human somehow). Anyway, he was forester of the *Duke of Oberwald, who is traveling back there to reclaim his heritage. He seems like a good traveling companion through the very dangerous woods. It's almost like Fate has brought them together.
