Callidas, The Generous Character in Markoth | World Anvil

Callidas, The Generous

Callidas was a Fey, who defected alongside his friend and ally, Tarvala. Instrumental in establishing a foothold for the Empire, Callidas is also widely credited with the founding of the Magic Academy, teaching countless mortals the ways of Magic, and being placed in charge of scripture within the Empire.   Callidas represents Generosity and Passion in the Nine, His stone is Markoth's Heart.

Early life

Very little is known about Callidas' early life, he was born in the fey realm, and watched Tarvala grow up as a slightly more senior member of the society. He studied consistently and often was seen as a silent observer in mortal-fey conflicts. It wasn't until he defected with Tarvala that Callidas became known to the mortals. He arrived in Markoth a few days after Tarvala began his work, dedicating himself to the cause.

The Academy

Callidas was rumoured to be the right hand man of Tarvala. Upon the commencement of the military campaign, Tarvala instructed Callidas to teach Mortals the way of magic. In Second Harvest 211AT, Tarvala assembled his war council and instructs Callidas to commence his studies of magic and mortals. He ventures out into Markoth in search of candidates to form the first class of the Markoth Magic Academy. The school officially opening in 223AT   From this point, Callidas holds a position of lecturer, Grand Magus, and Lead Librarian. He begins to build a library of books which are both written by and researched by himself and others of the Academy.

Notable Events & Stories

Callidas was once seen by five witnesses in a fight over a simple trade cart. The cart was destined for Arlessa, with supplies for a farmer. Callidas was studying the insects in a wheat field just south of the road when the cart was beset upon by two Fey. They approached the cart, and immediately began arguing with the driver. Callidas slowly began to approach the road when one of the Fey overturned the cart with a spell. Callidas immediately teleported behind the elf with his hands either side of the elf's head. He muttered a few words, and the elf fell lifelessly to the ground. The other Fey drew a sword and prepared to fight. Callidas turned and offered for the elf to simply leave, taking his friend's body, lest there be two unknown beings to bury. The elf did so.   In 275AT Callidas held a feast in the grand hall of Arlessa. The feast was for those who had helped plan and execute a victory against the fey in a recent campaign. Upon the tables being filled with food, and the guests arriving, Callidas went to check on a straggling guest who was expected to attend. As soon as he ventured outside, he noticed the scores of orphans, widows and impoverished, many whom had lost their loved ones in this war. After a short time, Tarvala looked up to see the doors of the hall swing wide, and Callidas lead close to 500 people through the hall and around the huge table. A feast for all was held that day.

As a Deity

Callidas represents the aspects of Generosity, and Passion
  • Generosity - Often confused with charity, generosity is actually referring to the acts of kindness and selflessness worshipers act from. Callidas' teachings show that when one understands the needs of others, themselves and the world around them fully, they are then able to tend to those needs. Selflessness is a way of being at harmony with the world. Those who worship this aspect of Callidas typically engage in cooking batches of preserves, jams or chutneys, to then gift out to those less culinarily gifted. The cooking itself typically done alone, or with those you love.
  • Passion - Passion for one's work, love and a general zest for life are key to a happy existence. Callidas' teachings show that Passion is the thing that drives us to accomplish that which those who lack conviction fail to attain. Passion is also our capacity for love beyond that of a close friend or family, without real love, live lacks vigor. A ritual of worship for Callidas for those seeking passion is to write words of feeling (poetry) on a scroll. and then sharing it with the one you love, before burning it over a scented candle with a silent prayer. This is said to provide your relationship with a stronger magnetism.
