Quinault Automotives
Founded in 1888 by members of the Quinault Tribe of the Washington coast, Quinault Automotive became world renowned for its finely crafted vehicles and upstanding business practices. The company was first run solely by Arthur Chitwhin, who originally made money by customizing and repairing engines. After regional success as the owner of a chain of native-operated garages, Arthur received funding from members of the Quinault and other Salish tribes to purchase an abandoned manufactory, converting it into the workshop for his first automobiles. The vehicles featured a revolutionary suspension system that allowed lower profile vehicles to safely drive in off-road conditions.
Chitwhin’s cars gradually grew to be the symbolic vehicle of turn of the century America, a finely crafted machine that had immense power under the hood, and the resilience to survive when the owner inevitably drove it into a ditch. His magnum opus was 1904’s Quinault Arrow, a diesel-fueled muscle car symbolic of American prosperity. He unfortunately did not get to see the car’s highly anticipated release, as he suddenly passed that year. In his will, Arthur Chitwhin ensured the proprietorship of QA to the Quinault Tribe itself, a move that likely ensured the survival of his culture in the following years.
When the Tribal Reallocation Act passed in 1907, the business was in danger of collapse due to the eviction of all tribal entities to Concord Minor. Due to the unique cultural impact Quinault Automotive had for the American people over the past 20 years, a political battle over the tribe’s fate ensued. After two years of debate, the Quinault were granted special status by the newly elected President Roosevelt, who himself owned two custom Arrows. Roosevelt's executive order ensured that employees of the American company were allowed special residential status regardless of tribal affiliation. To this day, QA protects the status of its entire tribe, “employing” all adult members of the Quinault tribe, as well as members of other tribes that helped them in their rise to prominence.
