The Half Curse

The Half curse was born of a conflict in the early days of Marcaille. The story goes, the Avatar of Identity was using Innuei's Mirror to build an army in his image, twisting their identities to align with his. Several Avatars conspired to put an end to it. The Avatar of Murder was given a wooden ward of Law from Hota's Avatar, protecting her identity from change.

She went to Innuei's Avatar under the ruse that she wished to join his army, at the last moment though, she drew Mant's rock and brought it down on him. The rock struck Innuei's mirror, shattering it. It's said that Mant delivered a mortal wound to Innue in the Hours that day. But principles are not mortals and Innue, not dead, cursed both Avatar's shattering their offspring into two.

Innue's Avatar died that day, but those he had changed took his curse and their offspring became the Halflings. Mant's Avatar became mother to the Goblings, Gob being Old Orcish for Half. Goblings and Halflings see themselves as siblings, both cursed the same way.

The Principles have taken pity on the Halflings as the victims of Innue's Avatar and that's believed to be the source of their uncanny luck. Meanwhile history has remembered the Goblings patron Avatar more favourably.
