The plant is largely used for its fibers and can be made into a strong rope through weaving. The relative abundance of the plant makes it ideal for working with.    The plant has also been used medicinally as a mild sedative in small quantities. Its use is not frequent due to its toxicity causing some side effects, such as nausea.
