The Value of a Mage

The magic user has a unique and valuable role to fill in the world. They are the only ones able to preform certain functions relating to Dragon Ore . If you are a mining town and you have Dragon Ore as a resource, you must have at least one mage in order to mine it successfully. The same is true of any craftsman wishing to work with the valuable metal.

Natural Born Sorcerers

A natural born magic user is referred to as a sorcerer. These rare individuals are able to manifest magic naturally and with far less effort that their Mage brethren. This has made them a valuable resource to craftsmen and trades requiring their talents. This gives them a certain popularity as well, being that no one else can do their job. They are paid better than most on average, both giving them a better state of living but this can also cause some jealousy among peers.  The cause of natural born magic users is unknown and there does not seem to be any common factor between the individuals. 

Mages of the Colleges

Mages spends years learning the art of magic, some only ever learning the most basic of spells. Others become incredibly adepts and can rival a sorcerer in their abilities. A mage normally comes from a wealthy family or some other station of privilege. The reason for this is that the colleges that teach magic are controlled by the upper and ruling classes. This leads to mages mostly operating in cities where their college resides. It also means they automatically have a place of status in their society.

As a college mage, you start as an Acolyte and must show you are adept at producing a reliable spell to be given the official title of Mage Practitioner. From there each mage college has its own structure, but there is only ever one Grand Mage.

Payment & Reimbursement

Mages of the Colleges come from wealthy backgrounds and usually do not need to make money in the mundane ways, but their services are usually highly sought after and paid quite well. Sorcerers get paid better than anyone else in their profession due to the rare and valuable resource they represent.

Other Benefits

Magic users are looked at as special in all social groups, regardless of class. Even a low class sorcerer can find acceptance to a high class event for Mage Practitioners.

All magic users have an elevated value no matter their native social class.
Sorcerers are held with a mic of reverence and disdain by their fellow man due to their elevated status. They are needed for certain functions but they are given special treatment because of it.

Demographics

While Mages generally come from the high class or wealthy, sorcerers are an enigma as to where they originate from. Anyone may be born with a sorcerer's talent, no matter if the lowliest of beggars or the prince of a nation.

History

Magic came suddenly into the world since the Convergence and has become an important part of life ever since. 
While the original magics have been lost to legends, modern magic has been in a state of discovery for the last 150 years. Many mages have made their mark on history through experimental studies and research. This has led to a very competitive attitude towards leaning and discovering new magic and applications.
Magic allows for the working of Dragon Ore and @dragon steel has become an integral part of military and combat applications. It has also been part of other less important functions like art and jewelry for those that can afford it.
