Cloak Forest

Covering the western slopes of the Dragonbone Mountains and spreading outward, this forest houses an abundance of life of all sorts.   The trees of the forest include oaks, aspen, poplar, birch, pines, rowan and other deciduous and non-deciduous varieties. Most all types of trees that can be found anywhere on the island can be found in the forest. As the extent of these woods is nearly the entire north-south range of the island, you will see trees that can handle the cold as well as more trees that are more temperate, or even in the far south semi-tropical, although these are scant.   Depending on the density of the tree canopy, shrubbery and other undergrowth may be plentiful or sparse. Among the lower growing plant life you'll find berry bushes, xxx more shrubbery types.   Even lower are the fungi, mushrooms aplenty, Morels, and Oyster, Chanterelles, Amanitas, Button and many others.   There are mosses, lichens, and ferns also.   The fauna is no less diverse. Great elk and moose can be found within the trees. Other deer varieties also make the forest their home. There are bears, foxes, wolves, cougar and lynx among the predators. In the open meadows that are scattered in the forest there may be streams dammed by beaver. Mink and ferret dwell here. Rabbits, mice, voles, squirrels are found in abundance.   And the birds! Many raptors nest in the highest tops of the highest trees, keen eyes looking for prey. Smaller birds make homes in the trees as well, such as songbirds, woodpeckers, doves and pigeons. Egrets domicile near the frog ponds and enjoy life.   We mustn't forget the reptiles. There are plenty of snakes and lizards enjoying the sunny spots and the rock outcroppings. Amphibians lurk in and near the ponds and streams and you can hear the croaking of frogs in abundance when near their habitations.   While all this sounds wonderful, the forest has its fill of more noxious critters. Mosquitoes and flies can torment the creatures who make their homes here as well as provide food for others.
