Coravak Desert

On the continent of Malan, to the north-east of the Capital City of Edon, lies the Coravak desert. This vast expanse of sand is rich in history and lore, with more myth than facts characterizing its inhospitable depths. While centuries of campaigns have failed to bring this land to heel, there are many who live among the dunes, scraping out an existence by way of generational knowledge, and specialized skills.

Bandits, brigands, and nomads frequently cross the vast wastes, though newcomers to the Swallowing Sands would do well to tread with caution. Many have lost their way, lost their nerve, and then lost their lives to the dramatic weather which shifts with the sun, transitioning from sweltering heat to cold.

Many traders will choose to take the long way around the desert, rather than brave the Coravak's dangers. Dramatic temperatures, ruthless bandits, and dangerous creatures make each excursion a life-or-death battle.

Climate

While the sands may shift beneath the feet of weary travelers, the climate of the Coravak desert does not. Year round, this vast expanse of sand is baked beneath sweltering heat during the day, and frigid cold at night. Precipitation of any sort is extremely rare here, and when it does rain, an event that usually only happens once every few years, it is taken as a sign from the gods.

History

The history of the Coravak Desert is a mysterious one, with scholars puzzling over its hidden secrets. Though few successful expeditions have been led into the desert, those who come back alive report that there are ruins of some ancient civilization peaking out from beneath the sands.

What was this kingdom? Who lived there? How did these ancient peoples build a civilization in this hostile climate, and what brought them to ruin?

Scholars have long puzzled over these questions, as the ruins appear to predate even the founding of The Kingdom of Elos. The only explanations delve into the territory of myth and legend.
