Basic Information

Biological Traits

Half Giants are tall and stout, among the largest of the civilized races, though they are not as tall as even the plains giants, the smallest of the true giants. Half Giants are broad shouldered and thick limbed, with the females being slightly taller and less stout than the males. Their hair ranges from deep black to sandy brown, and rarely red.   The Half Giants are the product of intermarrying and breeding between Plains Giants and Elph over the centuries, as a result their physical appearances vary geographically similar to the Elph, Half Giants of the Ghostwood region tend to be paler and have lighter colored hair, and those from the region surrounding Sand tend to be darker of skin and hair.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Half Giant names are very similar to Elph names. When the Elph first arrived in the West they had no written language. The simplicity of their spoken language meant it was fairly easy to attach to the runic script used by Plains Giants. As the Plains Giants and Elph began interbreeding and fighting for territory, their languages blended. The language used by modern Elph, Plains Giants and Half Giants, is a mix of spoken Elph represented by Giant Script.   Because of this shared language, Elph and Half Giant names follow the same patterns. Many Half Giants are kept as retainers in noble or elevated Elph houses, and children born as retainers often take the name of their Elph lords. In cases such as these, an extra term is usually added to the surname to differentiate retainers from the house.   Examples: Naki-osho Stone Cutter, Kim-oha Night Wanderer, Sengal Cloud Watcher

Common Etiquette Rules

Half Giants tend to be reserved and soft spoken. When the first Half Giants began appearing in the west, they were generally shunned and half giant children were considered shameful. They were usually either hidden, killed, or sent to live with their giant parents in exile. Because of this, their modern society is highly individualistic. Half Giants tend to live in isolation, though they are not unwelcoming of company. The one exception of this is in Sky. Sky is home of the largest remaining population of Plains Giants, and as such Half Giants tend are drawn there from all over the Free Cities. For Half Giants, Sky is seen as a place where they can have their own identity, instead of living on the outskirts of society. Some Half Giants still prefer solitude, and many of them live in the wilderness or settlements scattered around the territory of the Free Cities.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

The major difference between Elph and Half giants is the inheritance of surnames. In a marriag between two Elph, the woman will take the male name, however in a marriage between two Half Giants, the females surname is taken by the male. Because of this, in any marriage between a Half Giant and an Elph, the Elphs surname will always be the one to be inherited.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Half Giants are generally accepting of other races, they’re even known to tolerate Black Bloods as long as they aren’t overly trying to harm or oppress others. Half Giants do not tolerate slavery, and have been known to stand in the way of slave hunters. Though Half Giants are reserved and mostly peaceful, they are known for their physical strength and prowess in battle. Because of this, the mere presence of a Half Giant is often enough to keep Slave Hunters away and maintain peace in public.   Though during the Unification Wars and the First Contact Wars Half Giants made up a large part of the armies on either side, the Half Giants do not have a formal nation or military. Because of their individualist nature and isolationist tendencies, it is often said that each Half Giant is a nation of their own. They’ve been known to operate as mercenaries, explorers, city guards, and even to join the Itinerant Militia.
