Red Death

Red Death is a deadly plague that once swept throughout northern Magnamund. It is responsible for the deaths of as many as half the citizens in some cities.

Transmission & Vectors

Red Death is an airborne bacterial disease. It is highly contagious, but has a low incubation period, and infected individuals can expect to show symptoms within a few hours.

In addition, Gourgaz are immune to Red Death and often carry the infection. In this case however, Red Death is a bloodborne disease and only infects other through direct exposure to gourgaz blood.

Symptoms

Red Death presents as a cough as the fibers within the lungs begin to break down. This results in the victim beginning to cough up blood. The cough gets more severe as the lungs continue to break down until the victim either drowns in their own blood, or their lungs cease to process oxygen due to the physical damage.

Treatment

The only known cure for the plague is the sap of the Druse tree, which is why Druse orchards are now kept by noble families and fiercely protected. If the victim can persevere through 3-4 days of the illness, they will most likely recover on their own.

Prognosis

Red Death kills as many as 50% of those that are infected with it. At various times, it has swept across cities, wiping out populations.
