The Vigile's Equipment and Training
Composition
Manpower
Most cities maintain about 1 vigil for each 100 residents.
Equipment
Each member of the vigile is equipped with a shield and padded armor for protection and a pair of manacles. Their uniforms are blue and white with copper plated helmets and badges so that they stick out in the crowd. During times of emergency they don chain mail shirts for added armor protection.
During nighttime patrols they carry hooded lanterns with a spare flask of oil.
Weaponry
Each member of a city's Vigile is equipped with a club for subduing suspects and a short sword for self defense in a life or death fight.
Prefecture houses also keep a stockpile of crossbows and bolts for emergencies such as riots or invasions and some contain a ballista which is mainly used to demolish burning buildings to stop the spread of fire in the often crowded cities.
Vehicles
The Sipho is a horse drawn wagon that carries two 100 gallon barrels of water and a two man pump. It can spray a continuous stream of water or other liquid for two minutes and is usually used for fighting fires or crowd control.
Structure
Vigile's organize their units into prefectures. Each contains a Prefecture house and up to 80 vigils of all ranks commanded by a Constable. All prefectures in turn are commanded by the city's Prefect.
Training
Vigils are trained to fight as a light infantry formation

Upkeep
Each city is responsible for the wages, equipment, and training of their own Vigile. On average a vigil can expect to make a salary that's half again as much as a laborer.
Recruitment
Any adult member of any race in good health may join the Vigile as a recruit. Training lasts for 50 days and includes physical fitness, combat with shortswords and shields, riot control, investigation, firefighting, and the basics of other skills they need to know. Recruits that fail to meet specific milestones are drummed out routinely. Further training and skill development is given on the job.
