The Carinae
It takes you a while to see The Carinae. At first, as you leave the atmosphere and ascend into the night of space, you see it as an empty space where stars should be. As you approach, you realise it’s been painted a matte black. It’s shaped like a disk, at least 100 meters in diameter. On the “bottom”, facing into Niner Moon, you can see a smaller oval level stacked beneath it, a large section of it appearing to be glass, although from your angle of approach, the reflection is too bright for you to see in.
It’s only when you get much closer that you begin to understand why the Carinae needed crew so badly. There’s an enormous curved hole in the side, like a bite in a cookie, consuming what would have been around a quarter of the ship. The closer you get, the more you realise it looks exactly like a bite mark. You can see irregular protrusions, some metal and some magical, that appear to be acting as walls to the chambers that were exposed to the vaccuum of space. You think you see movement in one of the holes that used to be a chamber, although you can’t be sure.
Once you get over the missing chunk, you realise that the Carinae is banged up beyond all hell everywhere. You pass a large shored and patched section close to the hangar that Meritt steers the shuttle into.
The Carinae, or what's left of it, was tasked with expanding the "known" portion of the galactic map. It's common knowledge the gnomes are obsessed with their maps, always pushing deeper into space while the other species busied themselves with exploring and colonising the newly-catalogued planets entered annually into the GCA records. The knowledge kept in the journals and recordings of the Carinae is far from common.
Currently, the Carinae is barely operational, missing one of its hangers, its secure vault armoury, most of the crew quarters, the greenhouse and one of the cargo holds. The Carinae's goal is to get into gnomish spacespace for full repairs and debriefing. As they're currently operating well below their skeleton crew requirements, they're looking for temporary crew members to help hold the ship together until they can get to the nearest gnomish science base at in C-QZ-34. They've been orbiting Niner Moon for the past five months, and only recently completed refuelling and repairs on crucial systems.
