The gnomes don't really believe they were the first species to achieve interstellar travel, but they keep that to themselves. It doesn't matter anymore, not since they were joined by the humans, since the humans initiated first contact with the dwarves and the halflings, since the halflings met the dragonborn. Certainly not since the orc homeworld massacre, or since the Reparations War. Only the most dedicated historians care about what came before the gnomes. After all, history knows that the they had starcharts well before the humans conquered gravity.
History is vaguer on the ruins, the dead civilisations grander even than the elves' clean, bioelectrical cities. The gnomes may have starcharts, but the dragonborn have legends, and the elves have secrets, and the humans have...well, they're not entirely sure what it is.
Few probe the mystery. There's danger enough on the beaten paths, enough waiting to be discovered in the known galaxy. All anyone knows is that the answers lie in the abyss, where even the gnomish starcharts say only, here be monsters.
