Hirran Wedding Tradition
The Wedding Tradition is meant to honor a transition into a family group. It is a transference of responsibility and an observance of an intention between two people to share their lives.
Execution
The Hirran Traditional Wedding has many separate parts, beginning with a party to celebrate the imminent union. Friends and family all gather to eat, drink, and socialize. This is a time when the family of both people can get to know each other. The couple will serve the food, traditionally a fish soup and bread collection with cheese. Then comes the negotiation, in which the couple agree upon the terms of their marriage. This is usually overseen by a priest. Money, fidelity, living accommodations, children, and more are all discussed until agreement is reached. This is then woven into a spell knot. It is enchanted so that if the terms of the agreement are broken, the knot will come loose. Then is the consummation, in which the couple can choose to have intimate relations the day before the ceremony. If either is unsatisfied or uncomfortable, they can call off the marriage.
On the morning of the wedding, the couple bathe and wash their hair together. Meanwhile, the parental vows are taking place. This is a ritual among the parents of the couple in which they take responsibility for the spouse of their child and any future grandchildren. The couple emerges, dressed in dark gray, and present their gifts to the parents, while the other guests present gifts to the couple.
Common presents are tools to maintain a household. Dishes of glass and clay, woven blankets, lanterns, spices, and clothes. The party ends when the couple race across the beach and wade into the sea. They emerge hand in hand, soaking wet, and married.
