Delayed electrical poisoning
Transmission & Vectors
The disease occurs in those who have survived an Angelic Lighting Bolt. The unique brand of elecricity produced by angels can be deleterious to the human body, causing cells to eventually become cancerious. The most likely to be effected are red blood cells, but over time, the poisening spreads to the heart and brain.
Causes
The condition is a result of exposure to Angelic electricity.
Symptoms
First symptoms include watery looking blood, easily irritated skin, and hair loss. After several weeks of these symptoms, the condition enters phase 2. Brain waves become disrupted, causing forgetfulness, irrational emotions, and in some cases hallucinations. This can go on for months or years, and sometimes never progress past this point. However, it can enter phase 3. This includes all previous symptoms, though much more severe. Victoms may have trouble distinguishing reality from fiction, and memory loss will become debiliating. In addition, they are much more likely to expeirience cardiac arrest, or uncontrollable seizures. Insomnia is common at all stages, as well as frightening night terrors.
Treatment
Treatment for Delayed Electrical Poisening must be adminstered by an accomplished Mage. It includes several astral meditation sessions to refocus the brain, many water cleansing rituals, dream work for night terrors and insomnia, powdered Carrow root infusions to restoring healthy blood and strengthening the heart. A witch or sage, or herbalist is advised to stay with the patient during recovery, to tend to them and treat ailments both physical and mental.
Prognosis
Once the patient is fully in phase 3, recovery is unlikely, and they often confined to their bed. Death can be caused by heart failure, sleep deprivation leading to health problems for that reason, and insanity prevoked self harm. If untreated, death is likely.
If treated properly, the patient may recover mostly. The occasional bout of insomnia or nightmeres may remain as well as lasting Hemophelia. These conditions can be managed, and the patient can live a full life after recovery.
Sequela
During treatment, the patient may be hyper aware of sounds, movement, and vibrations. This can cause stress on the nervious system, and so the patient must be kept a quiet space, and contact with too many people at once should be avoided.
A sleeping patient should be monitered, in case a night terror causes increase in heart rate, or cardiac arrest. Treatment involves the understanding and exploration of these dreams, which can be distressing, and traumatizing. Be careful not to cause extra phsycological damage during recovery.
Prevention
After suffering an electrical shock from an angel, magical treatment is recomended. If the condition starts to form, it is easier to treat early on.
History
Known cases have existed for many thousends of years, though the condition is not well known by anyone other than Mages. The condition is easily mistaken for random insanity.
Cultural Reception
Those suffering from the condition are often diagnosed as hysterical or phsycotic. The most common treatment is isolating in an asylum. Victoms in the Old Country are more likely to receive treatment, but those in the Empire are often not aware that they are suffering from a magically caused ailment, and simply beleive they are loosing their minds. Many commit suicide.
