Therianthrope
Therianthropes are humanoids that, through various means, are able to change into animals, and sometimes into a bipedal hybrid shape. There are three basic types of therianthropes:
- True Therianthropy: True therianthropes, or therians, are born with the ability to shapeshift, inherited from one or both parents, and can shift at will, without being affected by outside conditions such as day/night cycles or the phases of the moon. Therians do not transmit therianthropy, and cannot be "cured" except through powerful magic such as a wish. They heal rapidly from most injuries except for those inflicted by silver.
- Inflicted Therianthropy: Inflicted therianthropes are cursed or infected with therianthropy. Inflicted therianthropes can transmit their condition with a bite, and cannot control their shapeshifting, typically involuntarily shifting when under great stress, under the light of a full moon, or (rarely) every night from sundown to sunup. Inflicted therianthropes can be cured via magic, either by having the curse lifted or the infection cured, depending on the method of infliction. Like therians, they heal rapidly from most injuries except for those inflicted by silver.
- Invoked Therianthropy: This is one of the rarer forms of therianthropy, due to the difficulty in mastering it. Invoked therianthropes voluntarily use an item or a spell on themselves in order to shift into a specific animal or hybrid shape. Those using this method must be careful not to "lose themselves" to the beast, becoming more savage or murderous in their humanoid form, or even losing their intellect to the beast until another can change them back. Invoked therianthropes cannot transmit their condition in any way and are not vulnerable to silver.
