darfellan
Darfellans are hulking, muscular aquatic humanoids who share many traits with orcas, including their agility and grace in the water, incredible lung capacity, and jet black skin with white markings. Once peaceful and philosophical hunter-gatherers of the northern oceans, darfellans often find themselves ruthlessly hunted by sahuagin, forcing them into a nomadic lifestyle in coastal regions.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Darfellans are upright bipeds standing 6 to 7 feet tall, with webbed hands and feet, a powerfully-muscled build, and almost no hair except for a small cluster of dark near the crown of the head that is typically tied back in a topknot. Their skin is typically glossy jet black, with varied white markings, the configuration and shape of which denotes their clan of origin. Rarely all-black or all-white individuals are born; such an event is treated as a sign of good fortune ahead.
Ecology and Habitats
Darfellans favor coastal regions, as they are clumsy on land and prefer to keep their feet wet. They are excellent at fishing, and frequently keep seals and sea lions as pets, hunting companions, and guardians. The depths of the ocean, meanwhile, hold dangers that the darfellans prefer to avoid:
Additional Information
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Darfellans are capable of navigating underwater through echolocation, emitting a series of high-pitched whistles and clicks that allow them to see obstacles up to 20 feet away even in absolute darkness, though this ability only works underwater.
