Why I'm Here

I apologize I’ve been a bit vague, Let me set the record straight. My family has a centuries old beef with a dragon, let call him Bngwesd (‘bing-wes-dah’). We were once kings and queens of the Uyghurs Mountains. Until Bngwesd stole(supposedly) our treasure. We were ruined. My ancestors obsession with revenge for the stolen wealth of the past drove them to squander all we had left. Being broken and destitute, we pursued a life of petty crime. Now, hundreds of years later if you’re a McNaugh’stee you have 2 choices, work in the mines or work for the family. Or both! I was a bit of an odd duck, I took a liking to the forests and wild areas of the foothills. My uncle said I was a fool for wasting my time. McNaugh’stee work is done with a hammer or a fist. It all changed when we heard an old legend about a plant that grows in the East. A plant that could protect from Dragonfire. As all legends are, it was somewhat vague on the details, but it was intriguing. Suddenly my interest in all things green might actually be an asset to the family. I think Uncle Bruce thought it was a fools errand, but my mum (his sister) convinced him it was a worthy endeavor to pursue. It was decided that the best way for me to help the family was to travel to the east to find this plant. With it we would finally have protection from the dragons greatest weapon and we could reclaim our treasure! That was 10 years ago. I haven’t been home since

Chance Meeting at Fumosville

I came to Fumosvile for 1 thing, seeds! I’d been wandering for while before I heard of this place. You see, I’m a seed guy, I’m not really a crime guy, but since I was raised by the McNaugh’stee crime family I can do crimes when I need to. When you’re traveling around on your own you learn to take what work you can to feed your belly until you can get to the next place.   During my travels I kept hearing about a ‘lot of food growers’ in Fumosville and I thought that’s probably a good place to find seeds. You see I like plants and I like to eat plants. Everyone in my clan thinks I’m nuts, “you should be eating meat” they’d all say, just one of several reasons for me leaving I guess.   I met Fern at the farmers market. We were both listening to this grower go on and on about some amazing technique for growing plants. I noticed this short (taller than me, but barely) cat-like Tabaxi creature listening intently and taking notes. I had heard of, but never met a Tabaxi before. So I shared a meal with them afterwards. I mostly listened as I heard all about Tabaxi culture and about Fern’s mentor Lucia. We had a shared love of nature and bonded quickly. I also learned that Fern, like myself, dabbled in the adventuring business. They heard that a well paying job was set to be posted the next morning.   Then there’s Robin. As Fern and I were eating we noticed this kind of a fancy pants lookin fella walking around with his Horse. He was talking to lots of people, apparently looking to do good deeds? Seemed a little out of his element among the common folks in the markets and what not. I pegged him for rich kid, bored with bullying peasants, looking for adventure. Guess I was right, turns out he also saw the post the next morning.   “Adventurers Needed to Save Beautiful Island From Monsters”   The only way to get to the island of AVENTURE, unless you have your own boat, is by taking the ferry from East Harbor. A 5 day journey from Fumosville. The road was filled with the normal travelers and also an increased amount of adventurers looking for the same thing we were. Adventuring is a dangerous game especially when you’re alone. I was looking for allies, and Fern and Robin were too. So here we are, about to board the ferry to what adventure lies ahead.

The First Hunt

Did I ever tell you about 'The First Hunt'?   Every Hill Dwarf clan has different traditions surrounding the Harvest Holiday. The McNaugh'stee Clan had one little tradition that we simply called 'The First Hunt'. While the clan is busy with the preparations of the harvest and preparing for winter, all the children of the age of 15 get to go out and hunt the great Bear so that the clan will have meat for the winter. When they return with their prize there is a great feast, but, not for the hunters. They say the young Dwarf needs to understand what true hunger feels like in order to build resilience and must fast on this day. If they do not it is a sign of weakness and they will lose the respect of the clan.   On my first hunt I was prepared. while most of my cousins spent their childhood breaking rocks in the caves, or getting into trouble in the city, I had been walking in the woods. Hunting small animals, squirrels, rabbits, yadda yadda yadda. I knew how to make traps, and I could track. I knew I could find the Great Bear and kill it before anyone else. I'd be the most celebrated McNaugh'stee of my generation! Well, I was able to track her and was the first to find her. As I pulled the string of my bow back and aimed I froze. As I hesitated, the others caught up to me and did what the tradition called for. I don't think anyone noticed that my arrow flew harmlessly into a nearby tree.   Is there some great lesson I learned? I don't know, I just think Bears are cool and why would you kill one for sport.
