Derelict Colosseum

The Colosseum, also known as The Great Colosseum is a gladiator arena built by the Emperor Ricardus Canina of Suncald early on in Suncald history. Once a part of the city proper, it was used decades ago to host public events like concerts, speeches, and tournaments, similiar to that of a Roman Colosseum.

Construction

Estimated to hold around 50,000 to 80,000 spectators at various points in its history hayday, the Canina, named after the Emperor who first commissioned to have it built was a sight to behold. Construction began under the Emperor Ricardus The First and was finally completed under the rule of his successor and heir, Ricardus the Second.   Ricardus I, originally commissioned the structure to be a shining jewel of the newely built Suncald which he had ruled for only about 5 years or so. Ricardus had originally wanted the Amphitheater to be used as a sign of prosperity and "Communial Success" for his city, believing that such a structure would bring the people together. While it was never fully completed until Ricardus stepped down as ruler, even while half completed, the structure often served purposes as housing, workshops, quarters for a religious order, a fortress, a quarry, and at one point a shrine.   However, following his son, Ricardus II, rise to power, the arena shifted in use to a more. . .brutal aspect.

Monster Battles

Gigantic one-eyed monsters with fierce tempers and extraordinary strength, the footsteps of a Cyclops are enough to make the ground tremble and freeze the blood of even the most successful Beast-Slayer. While a rare treat in Sunscald due to their rarity and the hazards that come with hunting them, a Cyclops in a Arena is big talk and many patrons would spend every coin they have to watch such a spectical as Man vs Cyclops.
Upon final completion of Canina, the inaugural games were held, on the orders of Ricardus II, to celebrate the completion. Executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Sunscaldian mythology, and briefly mock sea battles, all became the norm. The building, for the first time in it's history, had tasted blood, and it seemed for the most part that it couldn't get enough of it.   As time went on, changes were made to the Colosseum's general structure in order to make the "Games" more entertaining in the hope he would stay in favor.   These changes included
  • Shallow ledges
  • Sandbag walls
  • Collapsable pillars
  • Destructible tower platforms
  • Falling boulder traps
  • Barrel bomb obstacles (deals more damage to hunters than normal Large Barrel Bombs)
  • Beartraps (functionally similar to Shock Traps but can stop hunters too)
In addition, the Colosseum became famous for it's Monster Battles. First introduced by Ricardus II, who celebrated his campaign by hosting games where gladiators would fight with "savage beasts", beastial fights within the Colosseum were gruesome to say the least, but wildly entertaining to many of the spectators. Exotic wild beasts from the far reaches of the Sunscald Empire were brought in and paraded around in the inner city to entice would-be-viewers; hunts were then held in the morning prior to the afternoon main event of gladiatorial duels.   In addition, obtaining the animals used in the arena from the far-flung corners of the empire was an ostentatious display of wealth and power by the emperor or other patron to the populace, and was also meant to demonstrate power of the whole human and animal world and to show the citizens of Sunscald exotic animals they might never see otherwise.   Overtime however, following the fall of Ricardus II, the Colosseum fell into a state of disrepair. Although substantially ruined by earthquakes and stone robbers taking bits in order to repurpose the aging rock, the Colosseum is still a renowned symbol of Sunscald and is often listed as one of the wonders of the world. Many rulers following Ricardus II attempted restoration projects on the structure and after 8-10 rebuilds and repairs, it appears the Colosseum may have once again garnered new life.   Though given the recent tensions rising up from the bottom half of Arkael, one must wonder if that's a good thing.
An enormous arena built by the Government of Sunscald to train novices and entertain the masses. It was constructed by the councils most devious engineers
