Drog'nuuth

When Lumarvis was young, it was ruled by the Elements, those beings of chaos that came from the Planes of Fire, Water, Air, and Earth. These swirling masses of chaos served as a beacon for horrific beings from the void, slamming into the fledgling planet. They are believed to be related to the Illithid, though neither would agree to being associated with such filth.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Drog'nuuth are Eldritch beings, typically with faces of tentacles, arms that typically end in either more of the same or crab-like claws. Their feet usually end in thick talons that can double as a weapon if needed.   Most have two arms and legs, though some have mutated to have many different limbs, some that have tentacles and others that have claws. Fewer still are humanoid-like, with arms with opposable thumbs rather than the tentacles or pincers. Those who are humanoid are nearly always able to shapechange themselves, and they blend into society in order to infiltrate it however possible.

Genetics and Reproduction

Drog'nuuth are formed from the blood of the void creatures that landed on the planet dozens of millennia ago. The putrid liquid oozes through crevices of the world, finding an open space in caves of the Underdark or surface, collecting into pools that slowly spawn the creatures.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

The Drog'nuuth are spread throughout the world, their numbers currently small but growing ever since the beginning of the Primal Age.

Civilization and Culture

Average Technological Level

The Drog'nuuth do not have any major technological advancements; instead, the society they built during the Age of Elements and early Titanic Era was based around magic. They were among the first to discover shadow magics that harness the darkness around them, as well as harnessing psychic powers.

History

Age of Elements   Deep within the Void, that space which connects the world of the Material Plane, there exists dark spirits that seek to twist reality into a creation of their own doing. They search the endless, constantly expanding bounds of the void, desperately yearning for the energy brought from the other planes and desiring to sink their tendrils into them. These dark spirits created vessels that could ceaselessly scour the Void, finding whatever footholds their could create.   When the world was young, just formed of the primordial soup of the different elements being shaped by the Celestials, there was little but the endless chaotic energy of the elements clashing into one another. Out of this energy, there arose an aura from the planet. An aura that sent out a sort of signal to those creatures that lurked in the depths of the Void. As the Celestials were creating new humanoid races to populate their world, immense masses slammed into the planet, their tendrils of flesh and sinew taking root wherever they could find it.   These masses, later known to the inhabitants of Lumarvis as the Ancient Ones, created a form of empire that took root initially under the surface of the planet. Their influence spread throughout the caves of the Underdark and eventually bubbled up to the surface in pools of sticky, black liquid. Out of these masses, as their matter leeched into the soil, grew the Drog'nuuth, fanatical servants of the Ancient Ones. They continued the spread of the Ancient Ones power, creating colossal structures, great citadels and mighty temple cities, around the masses of their masters.   First, they struck out at the elements that called this world home, destroying them if needed and enslaving them whenever possible. Eventually, the Ancient Ones perverted the power of the elements, dominating the elemental lords near the rifts and turning their energy against the humanoids created by the Celestials. Some of the progenitor gods saw the destruction wrought against their creations and wept in compassion, helping them however they could. Others, however, grew apathetic, thinking that they would ultimately be unable to protect their creations, so why bother? These Celestials wanted to wipe the slate clean, start over, and create new beings, and banded together with the armies of the Ancient Ones. Thus, this brought about the end of the Age of Elements, and pushed the world into the Titanic Era.   Titanic Era   The Ancient Ones, with the aid of their loyal Drog'nuuth, managed to create an empire that spread from corner to corner of the world. They ravaged the landscape with the help of the elements, and were beginning to accomplish their goal of spreading into the Elemental Planes through the rifts that were present on Lumarvis. The Divine Celestials, those that saw this torment and anguish caused by the Drog'nuuth, created the metallic dragons, as well as stone based lifeforms, to help defend the humanoids that they cherished.   However, the Calamities, those Celestials who sought to destroy their creations, did the same, creating the chromatic dragons and giants. The Ancient Ones saw a path that guided them to an alliance of convenience with these beings, though they held no real loyalty for them. They knew that, should the moment arise, the Drog'nuuth would slaughter them just as they did the rest.   With the sides being set, war waged between the different forces, with countless battles breaking out across the world. Mountains shook and erupted, the oceans swelled, flooding the coasts, swirling tornadoes raged over the plains. All the while, the small, rather insignificant, humanoids stood in the middle, trying their hardest to fend off the forces of evil that threatened their survival. The Divines, seeing their creations being trampled and destroyed left and right, reached out and imbued some of their followers with fragments of their own power, allowing them to cast spells to both defend themselves and others as well as fight back and attempt to destroy the Drog'nuuth forces.   Slowly, with their newfound powers along with the strength of those the Divines created, the humanoid creations were able to begin pushing back the Drog'nuuth and giants, though the chromatic dragons still posed problems with the hit-and-run-tactics they employed. Over time, however, even they began to fall one by one. Perhaps the most famous battle was that which led to the creation of the Claw of Vozzuth, which served to further embolden the humanoids.    However, these victories did not come without cost. Towns and villages, entire cities, were left in ruin as the Drog'nuuth continued their marches of conquest across the continents. Tens, perhaps hundreds, of thousands were slain in the battles, and countless more left in various states of devastation. The Drog'nuuth began enslaving those that were uprooted, turning them into an army of mindless beings that did nothing more than the bidding of the Ancient Ones. They were forced into constructing larger and larger temples, pushing themselves until their bodies were physically incapable of continuing, left broken and abandoned at the footsteps of the magnificent structures.   Finally, after a couple millennia of war, the Drog'nuuth were pushed back to the corners of the world, their armies broken and scattered. One of their final stands is to the east of what is now the Burning Wastes, where the Spiraling Sea is situated. Before the Drog'nuuth rose to power, it was a large forest and grassland, home to a large variety of life. Then it was tainted, corrupted by the shadow magic they practiced. The blood and flesh of the Ancient Ones ran rampant here, killing off the wildlife and vegetation. In one last stand, they attempted to exterminate all life on the planet from this stronghold. This was luckily thwarted by a band of adventurers led by an Ancient Brass Dragon, who dove to the heart of the empire and sacrificed themselves, weakening their plans enough to only affect the surrounding area. In its wake was left the Spiraling Sea, with its whirlpool in the center churning the waters even to the coastline.   With the destruction of the final bastion of the Drog'nuuth, the metallic dragons turned to the Ancient Ones embedded in the crust of the planet. They were much too large to remove, and most attacks did little to faze them. With the help of the Divine Celestials, as well as the humanoid spellcasters, they were able to lock away the Ancient ones, keeping their power from exerting any further influence over those who were enslaved. One by one, they trapped these masses, turning their temple cities into the jails that would bind them.   With the Ancient Ones locked away, the Titanic Era was officially in full swing, the constructs and dragons created by the Celestials left to lead the world. Though the overwhelming threat seemed to have passed, the Drog'nuuth remained hidden, biding their time in the Underdark and whatever crevices they could work their way into.   Present Day   For millennia, the Drog'nuuth remained hidden, with only the occasional sighting sprouting up when they were too careless to not be caught. These were few and far between, never leading to anything more than a band of adventurers hunting down the sighted and killing it, taking the tentacles as trophies.   Despite the apparent loss the Drog'nuuth faced, the Ancient Ones were never truly defeated, and small pockets of their mass festered and grew, spawning more Drog'nuuth. Over time, these turned into small armies that worked on enslaving the beings of the Underdark. They worked with the Illithid and created entire colonies in the vast caverns beneath the surface. Together, they also turned to the Ancient Ones prisons, searching for ways to free them. Their blood also leeched into the surrounding ground, corrupting creatures that grew too close. Over thousands of years, this has created entirely new monstrosities that rose up around the jails, these beings also working on exerting the influence of their masters and desiring some way to break the bonds.   Now, the locks that once sealed the Ancient Ones have become loosened, and their escape is nigh.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

The Drog'nuuth view all other races as inferior. They will stop at nothing less than either the complete enslavement or eradication of any and all other life on the planet.
This species takes heavy inspiration from the Old Gods from World of Warcraft.
Lifespan
Unknown, though it is suspected to be in the thousands of years due to how long they have been seen to live.
Average Height
Varies greatly, from under two meters to over five.
Average Weight
Varies greatly, from under 100kg to over 3000kg.
Known Locations   Yagthmar - Arguably the strongest of the Ancient Ones, Yagthmar proved to be the most difficult to imprison. He resides within a complex underneath Linnesmar Steppes east of the Burning Wastes. His blood seeped out of the prison and corrupted the Thri-kreen that once thrived in the area, turning them into a more monstrous race hellbent on protecting the Ancient One and working on freeing him from the prison. Over time, they became known as the Yagthir, and they created an empire of their own within the Steppes based around the Ancient One's prison.   Zothaak - Imprisoned in the barren Treibsand Desert, Zothaak was the first of the Ancient Ones to be defeated, and he served as a sort of guinea pig for the creation of the prisons. Around his prison spawned an empire of lizardfolk that became corrupted and known as the Antudas.
