Pathstone

From the southern coasts of the North to the northern forests and savannas of the South odd stones here and there on tops of hills, by a busy road, or an undiscovered cliffside. While their original purpose remains unknown to all, their mere existence has sparked many a myth and tale about their origins and use.

Location

Pathstones can be found standing in prominent locations on hilltops, cliff edges or high along the sides of mountains, and those are the ones most known and found by various people all over the continents. However, they can also inhabit wetlands from bogs to mangroves, pathless woods and even uncharted islands far off any known coast.

The only places where these tall rocks are unheard of are in the far North, and the far South where vibrant green earth turns to uninhabitable lands of snow and sand. Even in the greenest fields and forests, however, they only ever appear alone.

Appearance & Material

These strange stones have no uniform shape or form, and can seemingly be of any known stone or stone-like material. Their height at least has some consistency, with an average of three meters tall and with an average width between a quarter to three quarters of the stone's height.

Beyond the general dimensions, the exact shape of these stones changes from one to another. Where some pathstones are curved like flowing water, others have sharp and rigid edges and a more block-like appearance.

The most prominent feature of the pathstones are the rune-like carvings embedded in the rock's surface. While this, among with the features described above, help identify pathstones, they are also among the most discussed of the stones' features due to the unknown method and tools used to make them. Many scholars over the years have suggested they may, in fact, be only markings formed naturally over time with no meaning whatsoever.

"It is strange, the way these stones seem to follow in the footprints of nature. They appear where there is green, and disappear where nothing grows."

"I wonder if they could have been beacons, or road signs, to show the right path for those who traveled their way.
The mountain folk say they were used to open pathways from one place to another, so the ancients who created them could cross continents within moments.
And in the Great Plains I heard a tale that the stones' creators spoke to the stones to gain directions and insights."
