The Magus
in English, by Francis Barrett, 1801
The work that touched off the revival of mysticism and the occult in the nineteenth century. Barrett's work serves as an introduction to occult and magical practices. Essentially a modern reworking of Agrippa's three books of occult wisdom, the work covers topics including astrology, demonology, and alchemy. Experienced dabblers find much of Barrett's treatment too watered down for serious study. The copy at the Orne Library was donated as part of the first Pickman Bequest.
