The Profaned Cathedral

Worship of the Light in the old world must have been treated with great reverence, if the grandeur of this cathedral is any indication. Even the uncountable centuries since the Great Cataclysm ruined the land, the mighty structure still stands when the city around it has long faded into ruin and crumbled. Mayhaps there is truth in the power of the Light and those who embrace it? Regardless, its status as a holy sight has since been defiled. numerous cultists worshiping pagan gods or heretical teachings have taken over the sight and desecrated it with unspeakable rituals over the years. Such that its heavenly glow spoken of in legend has now been replaced with a perpetual darkness of storm clouds over the once scenic lands. No one pilgrimages to it now, nor even scholars seeking the relics of the old world, for it has become a home to all manner of monsters and the occasional bandit camp. The ruined landscape is now so overgrown with shrubbery and vines crawling all over the building and up its spires that it could be said the building is alive. Though its bells no longer chine, its stained glass windows are busted out, and the once pristine marble walls are now stained black with the evil that has been committed there.

Purpose / Function

Once a place of worship in an old city. The city has since been ground to dust to where little remains but some edifices and broken roads. The sight has been desecrated such that the light no longer shines on it, and the forces of wickedness that monsters are made of causes many beasts to be drawn to the area. Bandits have also been known to take up shop in the area, if they can clear and protect it.

Alterations

The opulent structure is now in severe disrepair. The magnificent glass windows have been busted out by either zealous vandals, strong storms or the force of a ritual gone awry. Vines, trees and plants have take over much of the old city and the cathedral has whole hosts of fauna, some which have become distorted and black from the wickedness that permeates the place. The one shimmering white marble walls and columns have been stained black with all the evil done to it, and the sun lo longer shined over the grand cathedral.

Architecture

Tall spires on the towers besides the main lobby, high, angled roofing. Arches between the columns and tiled floors. The main component seemed to be marble and a concrete whose recipe is now unknown. At one point, it was white and glowed with holy light. It is now a dank and dark place that trembles with foreboding.

History

Erected during the golden age of the old world when worship of the Light was common and practiced. The Great Cataclysm blighted the world and reduced it to chaos and ruin. The city was abandoned, or destroyed (sources differ), but the impressive structure was protected by the Light as the city was eroded by time. The new city of Weinkauf was founded just south of the old city and pilgrimages to the Cathedral was common by scholars and theologians when safety and order returned centuries later. Until the place was desecrated in rituals by an unknown cult seeking to degrade or corrupt the Light by defiling its holy sights. The damage was done and repeated by copy cats and vandals for centuries to come, where now the Cathedral is known as a place that resonates with evil.
