Wayfinder's Compass

A light wooden disk with a dark peg protruding from its center sits askew on a shelf by the window. Outside you can see the rooftops of warehouses blocking sight of the hulls of a dozen or more knarrs and cogs with their masts standing bare, dappled with with bright patches of sunlight, and hear the calls of gulls and dock laborers. A glint of light from a thin brass ring pressed into the wooden disk catches your attention and you pick it up. Noticing the weight on the other side of the disk you turn it over and see an exquisite painted scene of Tala Eldoria the Everknowing and realise this must be a Wayfinder's Compass.   The brass knob in the center of the back of the disk is etched with the chorus of the Wayfinder's Lament, and resembles the head of her flail. Along the edge you feel some small chips and dents in what must be a well cared for instrument of a well traveled Keeper or Scalesinger, who had to use such a prized possession to navigate in rough waters. Perhaps even in fierce storms, or through dangerous territory. Turning again to the face of the instrument you see the ring that caught your eye is not alone.   Along with the set of rings are a pattern of silver rays bursting out from the peg that shine in the sun as you stand by the window and imagine a priestess stooped over a basin of water watching the shadow of the peg and judging the course to take. A cleric of the Oathwardens could mumble a few words of prayer and find her way in the pitch darkness of new moons, but this priestess with her faith in the Laws of the Wayfinder measured time and space with a simple wooden disk. Did she venture forth on the seas to deliver grave news, do battle, or bring sustenance to the starving?   Out in the hallway you hear the echoes of footsteps and know the master of your apprenticeship in the temple approaches. Placing the Wayfinder's Compass back on the shelf, askew just so, next to its companion curios. You glance out the temple window at the chop of the sea and wonder for a moment how your brother and father will fare with the catch today, then turn to attention facing the door as the proctor instructed when he left you to wait alone.
