Void Disease

A byproduct of Doom spirits and their power, Void disease is what happens when a person becomes infected by doom magic.

Transmission & Vectors

Void Disease can either happen by purposeful intervention of a doom spirit, excessive loose energy from them laying around, or even careless overuse of doom items. Latent Doom energy tends to result in less severe cases, but Direct infection from a void spirit often results in high severity varients. Overusing doom items is a middleground, but sometimes never results in infection at all.

Symptoms

The effects of void disease can vary wildly from person to person. Some have effects they can live with comfortably for their whole lives, others end up posing a massive danger to both themselves and others, and still others just straight up die. There are, however, a few commonalities and frequent points.

  • Extended lifespan, often with a caveat.
  • Often times, a seperate state of mind or seperate entity within the victim (one leaning more towards doom spirit)
  • Necrotic Influence, often resistance to necromantic magic.
  • Unusual, often fully uncontrolled, form of innate magic.
  • Lessened effect of restorative magic and/or discomfort from bright lights
  • Depending on severity, complete transformation into a doom spirit.

Treatment

Doom energy is already hard to work with, and is barely understood except by a handful of excentric, and often short lived, reaserchers. Combined with the wide variety of variations, and the high danger of caring for afflicted, and it's no suprise that there really isn't a known cure. However, some do find that there are methods of mitigating certain symptoms, though even then it requires some expertise on the matter, which as mentioned before, is a hard thing to find.

Prevention

While it's hard to handle Void disease once infection has started, if caught early on, direct healing magic and/or light magic can clear it out before it has a chance to take root, or at least weaken it so any effects will be less severe. However, the time range for this is short, often lasting between a week to a mere few hours, and doesn't work for all cases, nor is it always an option.

After this, the best one can do is that if someone looks like they might be severe enough to turn into a doom spirit... Kill them before the undead corpse left after turning can infect more. And if they do turn, don't listen to what they say, as the person they were is already gone at that point.
