The Dragonslayer Order

Excerpt from interview with Galanoth

Not everyone in the land of dragons is a fan of it's namesake.

Sure, the gods may be dragons, but actual dragons? They burn places down. Slaughter families. Steal from the helpless. Hoard away that which could help. And their damn hard to kill.

Which is why someone decided they had enough of it, and started killing them. And people started joining in, and now there's a group of people who've got dragon killing down to a science. That's us.

Structure

What, organization? What are we a guild? Nah. Look all you need to do is stick around with the main group a bit to get tips till you want to go out and do this stuff yourself. Just don't die, and listen to the others that know what their doing so you don't.

Well, I guess theirs ONE bit of organization. Head of the order is always Galanoth, like me. Don't matter who's under the helment, if their wearing it, their Galanoth now. Don't ask who we were, don't ask how many we're on, and if you know, don't bring it up. And you better bet anyone who'd take up that mantle is the best dragonslayer around. Main group tends to follow us around. And if we call for a REAL dragon hunt, you'll want in, cause it means the dragon's bad enough to justify leveraging the name for it. Only dragon that's gotten that treatment was Akriloth.

Once Someone's a Galanoth, their Galanoth for life. If they die, the next best Dragonslayer takes up the mantle, and keeps hunting the dragon that killed them, and killing any other dragons that get in their way.

Assets

We aren't the richest organization, but we do have some good stuff to us. We have this nice fortress up north near Akriloth's home volcano, so we can keep an eye on the bastard. It used to be a massive church for the dragon gods, and yeah, the irony isn't lost on us. But it kinda fits, if most dragons were more like the dragon gods, maybe our order wouldn't have to exist.

In terms of funding, we DO slay dragons. We get first pickings on a slain dragons horde, though we make it a policy to share most of it back to the people the dragons stole it from when possible. But we make way more money from actually selling the dragons parts. Tougher dragons tend to be magically powerful, and there's use to that for any decent crafter or mage.

Most of our money is spent buying tools for the trade. Dragonsbane ore is hard to get, but an absolute game changer on tough foes. We also have to buy new equipment for recruits, like weapons, armor, bombs, potions, traveling equipment, enchanted equipment, food, and so on.

History

Order got founded when the first Galanoth had his home and family burned to a crisp by the Elemental Dragon of Fire, Akriloth. They swore vengence, and decided any other asshole dragon that'd do the same would get the sword as well. And people agreed, so it just kinda built up.

The Dragon Faith

"So do you all believe in the dragon faith?"- Loremaster Maya

"...You fucking serious?" - Galanoth

No, of fucking course the Dragonslayer order doesn't give a shit about the Dragon faith. Though I guess we do give the divine dragons a bit of amnesty usually. They tend to be the only dragons that are consistently helpful, so there's really no point bother with them. That, and there was this one time a former dragonslayer came back as a divine dragon, and helped kick ass. That was awesome.

Course, the second a divine dragon STOPS being good and starts acting more like other asshole dragons, we will not fucking hesitate to go godslaying.

The Galanoths

Why the Galanoth system? Hm. Tell me, do the Loremasters know how many Galanoths we are on?

Honestly? We have some theories, but can't pin down an exact number. It's rather vexing.

Good. Cause neither do the dragons. Sure, they can make guesses, but they don't know what feats to attribute to the current Galanoth, or learn how we fight, or even if we have any weaknesses.

But the real reason? Is cause it leaves some doubt for one possibility. That the first Galanoth, the one that scarred Akriloth himself? Might still be me. I could be making this whole tradition up, and just have some form of extended lifespan. Or not! Thing is, I bet even you archivists can't prove that one way or the other, can you?

I... Well...

Exactly. And that? That terrifies dragons to no end.
