Duat
Even in the middle of the desert, Duat thrives like no other. A powerhouse of the world, Duat has massive amounts of precious metals and gems, it's on a convergence of powerful leylines for enchanters to tap into, and It's oasis grows various carefully guarded spices unique to the region. In terms of natural resources, it's practically unparalleled.
The people ascribe their fortune to two things. The blessing of the Snake god, Tanyin, and their strength. The strong rule in Duat, regardless of what methods they use. Strength of mind, and strength of body are all the same. All that matters is that they have the means to ensure the kingdoms prosperity from threats. And according to their faith, those who are strong are blessed by Tanyin.
Government
When the city was first founded, the Pharoh was a hereditory rank, but later changed to be a position earned through combat, assassination, or Command. When someone with enough acclaim with the citizenry wishes to challenge a leader, the leader must aquiece, and the peple decide how the battle shall be faught. The most common methods are either public gladiatorial match, both parties attempting to assassinate the other over the course of a month, or the two taking their most loyal servants and commanding them in a small war.
If neither party can defeat the other, then leadership stays with the existing royal. should both die, then the existing royal's heir takes over. And should the loser somehow survive, they are to be executed on sight.
Defences
Duat is filled with people with bloodlust and skill, and even a commoner can fend for themselves better then most. In addition, the actual fighters tend to make use of the leyline conduit the city is founded on, not by casting spells, but directly infusing themselves with magic, often via specialized tatoos, potions, or mutations.
Assets
Duat is the richest city in the world for good reason. The citizenry benifits from great wealth, but their faith and laws keep them sharp. Among these riches are mines that have been bursting forth with rare minerals of all kinds for years, Exclusive spices that are guarded very carefully, and a direct access to a powerful leyline convergence.
Even should the mines dry up and the spices shared with the world, the leylines will keep Duat powerful. The purity of magic flow is so strong that a mage or crafter in Duat is practically on par with even soulweavers and their like. In addition, Duat captures the raw magic in specialized containers, which they can then sell to the world.
Tourism
While Duat does have many an outsider show up, and be welcomed in for trade, it is not a place for tourists. Duat keeps it's trade secrets close, and is wary of those who may come to take them. And with the viciousness of the people, a person coming to tour the city will often need to fend for themselves, or be found on the slave market later.
