Spire of Apocalyptic Evil Settlement in Lords of Steel | World Anvil

Spire of Apocalyptic Evil

In the time before time, a dread pillar of despair was raised. And the people wept as the shadow of doom fell upon the land.
— Sermons of Metal, record 1, side B, track 666

Raised from the incandescent lava of the Mountain of Endless Fire a monolithic spindle of jagged black obsidian a league high towers over the land, chained to the volcanic crater's rim by quicksilver chains forged from the wailing of the damned. Ruling from his dark lair at the summit, Xaph the Evil maniacally plots and schemes his diabolical plans.

A Vertical Labyrinth

Nobody is entirely sure what the exact layout of the tower's interior looks like. The few survivors from doomed expeditions to the spire recount tales of an impossible maze that seems to twist and turn in on itself and changes with every visit. A grand staircase made from the blackened iron skeleton of a Celestial Wyrm whose league long spine coils around a bottomless pit in the tower's center. Impenetrable barriers of foul, discordant magics prevent all but the evilest of the evils from passing, forcing heroes to go the long way around.   The endless corridors are lined with tapestries showcasing the tower's dark master's evil triumphs, alongside the banners and trophies of fallen heroes and looted nations long since ground into dust by Xaph's Dread Legion of Doom.

Study of Apocalyptic Doom

Steel your hearts, oh Heroes of Metal, lest yours souls rust in the presence of its terrible majesty!
— Sermons of Metal, record 3, side A, track 37

At the very summit of the spire, Xaph maliciously lives in his perpetual state of unlife. It is here he makes his study, ruling over his vile forces of evil with the iron grip of his Death Metal fist and devising new riffs of doom on the seven-and-a-half stringed Guitar of Unreality.
