Corvettes Vehicle in Long War | World Anvil

Corvettes

Corvettes are ship between voidcrafts and frigates in terms of size and tonnage, capable of serving many roles both on the battlefield and outside of it. In most cases simply too small to install a hyperdrive on them, which means that they are units limited to their star systems, unless they will be carried via voidcraft carriers through hyperspace.   They can be used both in a military and civilian way. The latter one means serving as a customs or police ships - such corvettes are lightly armed, but both fast and sufficiently armed to destroy any civilian ship that refuses to listen to their orders. Or they can just shoot their engines and wait for heavier ships (with boarding troops) to come.   The former can be further divided into two groups. First possible usage is defensive. Voidcarriers bring them through the hyperspace, and deploy to reinforce escort in terms of AV Defense. Corvettes can be deployed en masse, capable of fielding notable firepower against incoming rockets, missiles and fighters, making it harder for them to reach ships of the line.   Second usage is offensive, by launching them as a part of wolfpack. Which means attacking enemies by masses of assault of missile corvettes, normally with support of fighters and bombers against - preferably - singular key enemy ships (for example AVD cruisers) in hope of overwhelming them with their numbers. Unlike fighters they are simply too large to go into dogfight with ships of the light, as they will be quite quickly wiped out by escorts. They can also be used in hyperspace, to detect enemies with gravity sensors. They are also deployed for example by pocket battleships to hunt fleeing cargo vessels.

Variants

Corvette - Base variant - and name giver) of a whole class, created with versatility in mind, that can be refitted into nearly every single one configuration to serve in the role they are actually needed.   Courier Corvette - Couriet Corvettes are a variant of corvettes fitted with hyperdrive and a very powerful engine. Which, together with a reactor, makes up for about 80% of ships' mass, with the rest being main computer, life support system and crew quarters (for up to three people).   Military courier corvettes serve as the fast ships of every fleet, whose mission is transfering important informations, orders and so on from system to system. Only military, as from civilian infotransfer are typical cargo vessels, slower but cheaper. They have no weaponry, since it doesn't matter what they do, they will end up wiped out even by a fighter. Military prefers slightly more economic courier frigates, but there are always some corvettes in case of a really high priority messages.   Fire Support Unit - A corvette variant exactly as monothematical as courier units. But rather than being a hyperdrive surrounded by armor and crew quarters, they are a artillery cannon or missile silo with armor and engines. They are unmanned drons, that are deployed right before firefight starts, firing one rocket or few artillery shells before shutting down. They tend to be used by fleets severely lacking money, as they can be deployed even from cargo vessels.

Configurations

Missile Corvettes - Missile corvets are corvettes configured with launching up to one-two salvoes of heaviest missiles possible, normally up to 5 SK or 25 LSK missiles. Sometimes they are also configured to launch extreme numbers of conventional rockets to decimate fighters, but that's rare.   Missile corvettes are capable of firing few surprisingly devastating salvoes... and then they should flee as fast as they can, as even fighters are capable of destroying them easily. Just as in case of voidcrafts, whole squadrons target a singular ship in hope of overwhelming its defense and eliminating from fight.   Assault Corvettes - Corvettes constructed with being an artillery platform in mind. Light, but not lightest. MAWs, in most cases, capable of being used as AV defense. They are capable of literally shredding nearby targets to pieces, be it voidcrafts, rockets, or even frigates (that after being hailed by rounds from few corvettes will quickly be shredded into pieces). They are also used to protect bombing runs from intercepting fighters.   Escort Corvette - Corvettes constructed with being a support for escort ships in mind. Decked with low calibre weapons for AV defense, and up to 1-2 heavier MAWs to attack other corvettes. Plus best possible Electronic Warfare equipment that can be placed in hull so small. They operate in squadrons, surrounding ships of the line and escorts, as additional AV defense, increasing their chance of survival under assault. They are also used as patrol and police units within the system, since they are fast enough to catch with most ships in Galaxy, while powerful enough to obliterate engines of a cargo carrying contraband, or at least slow down a fleeing pirate.
