Granthrun

Granthrun lies carved into the Velstrom Peaks of western Dunewald. Unlike their kin in more secluded mountain halls, the dwarves of Granthrun have turned their faces to the sea. Their forges are never without the scent of salt air, and their songs often speak of both thunder and tide.

Where most dwarves mine the deep earth, Granthrun delves just as often beneath the sea, exploring its shipwrecks, trench ruins, and abyssal canyons. Their mountain hold towers above the coast, yet their true reach extends below the waves and into the storm-clouded sky above.

Government

Granthrun is ruled by King Hragmar Thunderhelm, a seasoned warrior and master tactician who earned his crown not through bloodline, but through legendary acts of combat prowess and storm-forged leadership. The kingdom is governed by a dual council system: the Deepstone Council, representing the traditional dwarven clans of miners, smiths, and masons, and the Stormdeck Assembly, composed of captains, salvagers, and sea-traders. Disputes between land and sea interests are common, but both factions recognize the value of the other—Granthrun’s strength lies in the fusion of stone and surf.

Defences

The warriors of Granthrun are called the Waveguard, clad in armor of etched stormsilver and wielding axes, hammers, and spears that thrum with pent-up current. Waveguard infantry are trained to fight aboard swaying decks, within flooded tunnels, and across sheer cliffs.

The navy is a fierce force, with ships armed with bolt-casters—ranged weapons that fire electrically charged harpoons. Their flagship, The Thunderwake, is legendary, its keel reinforced with stormsilver and its prow shaped like a roaring dwarven face.

On land, Granthrun’s mountain defenses include lightning towers—tall, stormsilver-spined pillars that draw natural lightning and convert the energy into arcane defenses during sieges.

Industry & Trade

Granthrun’s economy flows through sea lanes and storm-wracked cliffs. The dwarves maintain a fleet of armored salvage ships, reinforced with deep-diving hulls, capable of withstanding immense underwater pressure. These vessels recover sunken treasures, rare materials, lost cargo, and fragments of magic from wrecked ships—some recent, others ancient.

One of their greatest sources of wealth is stormsilver, a silvery-blue metal mined from high cliffs and rare oceanic veins. This metal naturally conducts and stores electrical energy, allowing dwarves to forge weapons that crackle with lightning or power tools with charged plates and runic circuitry.

The dwarves also trade in pearls, aquatic reagents, preserved deep-sea creatures, and sea charts, which are sold to mages, alchemists, and adventurers.

Their coastal trade relationship with the elusive Perla is unprecedented. Though the Perla will not reveal the locations of their hidden basins, they maintain trusted trade zones near the coast where Granthrun’s emissaries bring goods. The Perla trade in rare magical items and coral-based artifacts in exchange for stormsilver, crafted tools, and thunder-charged enchantments.

Infrastructure

  • The Skyvault: A massive atrium beneath the mountain's peak, open to the heavens through skylights. Stormsilver conductors line the walls, channeling lightning into storage batteries used for enchantments and weapon-charging.
  • The Coral Gate: A half-sunken causeway of stone and coral serving as the primary trade post with the Perla.

Guilds and Factions

Religion

Granthrun dwarves have perhaps the widest array of rituals, serving different powers based on their particular needs. Though reverence for Thalugarn remains strong, Granthrun seafarers also honor Maridyn and Zephyriel, asking that they bless their journey on the seas. Rituals involving thunder chants, signal drums, and offering seawater in polished bowls are commonplace for seafarers.

Drowned Archive

There is a more secretive arm of Granthrun’s scholarly caste, where recovered ruins and artifacts from the ocean depths are studied in sealed, pressure-resistant vaults. This group refers to themselves as the Drowned Archive, and have been known to fixate on recovered artifacts, sometimes to excess.

Tourism

Granthrun society is marked by a rare blending of dwarven pragmatism and maritime daring. Their youth often undergo "the Storm Trial", a rite of passage involving sailing a lightning-touched coast, retrieving an object from the sea’s depths, or surviving a stormborne journey. Those who pass are honored as Stormborn, and many go on to crew or command the kingdom’s famed deep-sea vessels.

Unlike the measured pace of underground holds, life in Granthrun is brisk and loud. Taverns roar with sea shanties. Apprentices shout over crashing surf as they learn to anchor harpoons. In coliseums open to the sky, dwarves gather to watch duels where warriors clad in stormsilver armor channel lightning in combat for honor or sport.

Granthrun culture prizes adaptability, strength in chaos, and respect for nature’s wrath—particularly thunder and tide. Dwarves here see the ocean not as a barrier, but a battlefield, a forge, and sometimes, a grave.
