Carthal Wait

Carthal Wait is the grim home of necromancers and liches ruled by the eldest of the dark gods, Apatoth    Great ruins of cities and towns dot the landscape of Carthal, broken up by bone strewn fields and forests. These settlements are populated with undead who wander aimlessly and totally ignorant of their surroundings. The stench of death is thick and overwhelming. Victims of Apatoth's machinations end up here, where they are often subjected to obscene defilement by his spawn.

Geography

Great Crypt of Nabulgarm

Lying at the center of the Forest of Flies, lies the Great Crypt of Nabulgarm. Tall, twisting steps carved out of stone lead up to dizzying heights where the Great Crypt itself rests on a small plateau. Climbing the steps themselves is no easy feat as any intruder will be assailed by swarms of corpse flies and gnarled roots and misplacing a step could prove fatal.

Black Sepulchre

The Black Sepulchre is the seat of Apatoth and is where nobleborn souls are imprisoned. The ground in and around the city is a fetid cocktail of stagnant water and mud and is home to thousands of carnivorous beetles and worms. The undead shuffle about like docile cattle, stumbling into each other or simply staring off into the distance. In stark contrast to the rest of this world, the buildings are befitting of noble blood, with grand and opulent designs. At the edge of the city lies the Winter Cathedral, where the dark god of undeath himself resides.

Ecosystem

Bone colossus   Bone colossi are gigantic constructs made from the bones of giants, with the largest known example being from the Pale Dawn war, standing over sixty feet tall. Their creation requires a particularly powerful necromancer or several 'lesser' necromancers. Although their size and strength alone is more than enough to smash a small army to pieces, they can often be seen carrying giant femur bones as improvised clubs.   Carthal hound   These zombified canines are often used to guard the estates of the undead aristocracy and the Black Sepulchre. What makes them particularly dangerous is their ability to track a target by picking up the trail left by their life 'presence' (essentially traces of their soul). Once it is picked up, they are then able to teleport directly to their quarry, even if they have left the plane.   Corpse fly   Corpse flies are large, grotesque insectoid demons that can be found blotting the already dim skies of Carthal. Adult corpse flies have bony scythe-like forelimbs which they use to decapitate corpses, preferably fresh, for the purpose of laying their eggs inside their throats. The organs of the cadavers provide all of the necessary nutrients for the larvae until they mature to adulthood.   Fel wolf   Standing at twenty feet tall at the shoulder, these undead wolves are the apex predators of Carthal. Their skin is covered in gross, infected wounds and decomposing flesh and their bones are often exposed in gory detail. A Fel wolf's mouth is overcrowded with gnarly teeth, stained dark brown with plaque.   Grave digger   Grave diggers resemble massive black beetles, not unlike those found throughout Jordfold. They have very hard exoskeletons and two pairs of large, powerful forelimbs which they use to dig out their labyrinthine network of underground tunnels. The tunnels they dig are often used by the armies of Apatoth for infiltrating behind enemy lines. Besides their thick outer shells, they have a large jagged horn for defence.   Hollow   The hollow are reanimated corpses, in various states of decomposition, that make up of the bulk of any undead 'legion'. By themselves, they lack the intelligence to employ any real tactics beyond shambling in the general direction of the nearest food source to devour it. Their real threat comes from their great numbers and their physical endurance. Hollows are often enslaved to either a necromancer or a wight.
