The Weave

The Weave is a term used by most arcane magic wielders to describe the threads of reality they perceive and manipulate to achieve magical effects. Nobody knows why The Weave exists, or why it is possible to manipulate it in very limited ways, but without it magic, as it is currently understood, could not exist.

Aside from the general knowledge and theory taught in Wizard Colleges, the only other major facts commonly known about The Weave are that it can break, temporarily, leaving a small area without magic at all, and that it can distort, causing any use of magic to erupt in random surges of chaotic energy. Both such events are, thankfully, extremely rare.
