The Lightning Rail

The Lightning Rail is a Korbalian innovation which has revolutionised the transportation of people and goods between the major cities of the kingdom.
A lightning rail train is made up of an Arcane Engine linked to a series of connected carts, all of which float about 5 feet off the ground.
Each cart, similar in form to a large wagon with no wheels, has a series of Arcane Sigils carved onto its underside. A corresponding set of engravings mark the top surface of the Steel Rail which extends out on the ground for the train to follow.
An arcane discharge crackles like lightning between the two sets of sigils, which gave the system its name.
The rail which the trains follow are long steel capped beams which stretch for miles, interspersed at regular intervals with half-ring structures marked with different sets of sigils which activate as the train approaches and works to stabilise the orientation and speed of the trains as they pass.
Each of these structures has a permanent guard post housing a small unit of Kronenwächtewhich stay in regular communication with each other and will investigate any unreported disturbances to each other or the timetable of the lightning rail services.
Access & Availability
Most citizens of Korbal are familiar with the Lightning Rail, as they are with the Airships which drift across the skies of their country, however it is rare that most of the common populace would ever have the funds or the need to purchase a ticket to ride one.
Discovery
The Lightning Rail was invented by a group of artificers who were attempting to devise a more efficent method of moving supplies to armies in the field. Their experiments didn't yield much that helped with their initial goal, however they did develop a system which worked extremely well as long as the routes being travelled were fixed and pre-established.
