Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Maximilian is built lean, his strong but wiry frame the result of extensive and deliberate training. It's not uncommon for him to sport some degree of copper stubble but he dislikes letting it develop into a full beard. His hair, meanwhile, is kept in a fairly well maintained short mohawk, the rest of his head closely trimmed. He does have a collection of piercings, a pair of platinum helix rings in his right ear, a silver ring in his right eyebrow, and small collection of interchangeable studs for his tongue. In contrast, his general state of dress is professional. At minimum, a well fitted polo shirt and slacks but it's not at all uncommon to see him in various tailored suits.
His sister shares the same build, taking part in the same fitness regimen. Her own crimson hair is kept up and out of the way in a high ponytail, only coming down to just beyond her shoulders when loose. Her own piercings are a mirror of her twin's, a pair of helix rings in her left ear, a ring in her left brow, and sharing the selection of studs for her own tongue piercing. Her own mode of dress, though more seldom scene, is much the same as her brother.

Special abilities

Quantum Twins: There’s more than meets the eye to Setanta, specifically that it isn’t just Maximilian. His twin, Maxine, and him are stuck in a state of quantum entanglement due to their opposing abilities which became active in the womb. Maxine’s ability is a form of quantum phasing which she is, unfortunately, unable to deactivate. It is an automatic defensive ability which activated in response to Maximilian’s ability activating, quantum superposition. As immature as he was, he could only shift his quantum state so far, into his sister’s space. The conflict of their abilities lead to their current predicament. They occupy the same space, the same atomic structure. Maxine cannot actually turn her ability off, even were she able to, as the result would kill them both. And as she is phased into his own structure, she is unable to actually interact with the world at large. The two are still two distinct entities despite this, both requiring nutrients, oxygen, all the things vital for human health. This means Maximilian must eat and drink twice as much, supplementing a lot with vitamins, and his risk of drowning or asphyxiation is higher. Things like drugs, alcohol, and other toxins have a lot of trouble with them though for the same reasons. This also means that their brain matter exists in parallel, their thoughts intermingling and their identities, while still distinct, often intersect. They are both, to be blunt, unstable.
Entangled Superposition: The twins are inseparable, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be apart… sort of. Maximilian’s ability is quantum superposition, and his sister became entangled when he instinctively triggered this in the womb. With practice, and growth, they have discovered that their unique predicament has resulted in his ability… changing. When he utilizes it, it is actually Maxine that pops up in the secondary position. Still linked, but apart. Max is able to cast her to anywhere he has line of sight. This is instantaneous, as is retrieving her. Doing so is mentally taxing on them both, however, so they can only separate for a handful of seconds at a time and must rejoin for an equal amount of time. With effort they can stretch this if they are close together, but they then require an hour or so to recover.
While separated, they are still linked. Damage taken by either is taken by both once they rejoin, Maxine’s phasing does not work while separated to protect her either.
Partial Phasing: Maxine is bound to her brother due to her quantum phasing, which she is unable to turn off. Ordinarily, aside from their quirks and the fact that she is basically undetectable when entangled with her brother, this has little actual impact. With concentration, however, she can utilize it in a way that makes her brother’s ability more useful. When they are still together, she can take items that they can grab by phasing them with her. The twins use this to equip her with firearms, armor, and other equipment for when she is superpositioned into the fight as well clothing and the like. This ability doesn’t work on larger objects or living objects, however.
Combat Training and Conditioning: The twins have been trained extensively from a young age in various forms of combat, growing up as they did as part of the IRA. They are both extremely proficit in a handful of forms of close quarters combat with their bare hands and weapons such as knives, hatchets, and improvised tools. They have received tactical training in basically every firearm they could get their hands on, utilizing both traditional firing stances and practices as well as more modern ones such as C.A.R. and employing the various supplemental equipment. Further experience as one of the Irish mob’s principal enforcers has given them even further education in employing various forms of violence upon others.
In addition to training, the demands of their profession has led to them seeking to keep themselves in as tip-top physical condition as possible. They stick to a careful diet and exercise regime and constantly seek out additional lessons and classes when able. Both twins are able to run long distances in full gear with only mild discomfort and labored breathing, and are as strong as any athlete in peak condition. It must be said, however, that they are still human. Injuries will take time to heal, they aren’t dodging any bullets, nor are they kicking down concrete walls.
Combat is, however, where part of their instability tends to rear its ugly head in a rather noticeable sense. Whether it be the heady cocktail of chemicals the body releases or the strain from superpositioning in combat or a mix of the two, their namesake becomes more apparent as the fight goes on. Setanta finds it harder to differentiate friend from foe the longer things go on, ultimately engaging anything in the area until all apparent threats are neutralized. As such, they tend to engage targets alone outside of ambush scenarios.
Arsenal: Setanta has access to basically the entirety of the Irish crime families’ arsenal, from small arms and high-explosives to, with enough notice and approval, anti-vehicle missiles. They keep a personal collection of many of their favorites, with Maximilian showing a marked preference for American-built ARs and various AK platform rifles while Maxine gravitates towards a variety of European imports. All are well taken care of and sport a variety of accessories for any given mission. Notably, the twins do seem to agree on their choice of duty pistol being the FNX-45 Tactical.
In addition to weapons, they also have a wide array of available body armor, optics, and other equipment for a wide variety of tasks and duties. As far as ammunition, given past dealings with supernatural beings they do have ready access to silver, incendiary, and explosive ammunition. It is, in point of fact, common practice for them to load alternating loads of silver, incendiary, and armor piercing into at least two of their rifle magazines just in case.
It’s a fair assumption that at least one of them, and more often than not both of them, are always armed.
Irish Families: Setanta is a high-level enforcer for the Irish crime families out of Dublin, having grown up in the IRA and transitioned into them. They are generally called in on favors for the various Irish groups throughout the country to take care of problems, and have moved in Philadelphia to clear the way for the Dublin families to move their gun trade in. Their nickname is well known amongst these circles and is well respected, though their constant moving about tends to keep as little information as possible out of the hands of the authorities.
Their position grants them access to many, many things given enough time, as well as a ready source of willing manpower should they need something taken care of without their direct involvement. Of course, it also comes with the threat of retaliation from other criminal outlets as well as the always looming possibility that they might be arrested and imprisoned, though with the families connections that could be a difficult and dangerous prospect itself.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Maximilian Kelly, and his sister unknown to most anyone, was born to a Catholic family north of Dublin. His mother died in childbirth and his father, preyed upon in his grief, took up with the IRA and died a few short months after. He was raised in a sort-of foster situation, being passed around from family to family as room became available amongst the IRA membership, never really long enough for him to form any real familial attachment to anyone. This, coupled with the odd voices and errant thoughts that weren’t his own, did not help his mental state. This was part of the plan, the leader of his father’s particular IRA cell intending to raise him as a child soldier with the idea of assassinating key English leadership. His upbringing for much of his early years was therefore focused on things like bomb making, marksmanship, and the like. Of course, being a child, he wasn’t exactly an effective weapon but the man in charge wouldn’t be dissuaded until he got caught out on a raid and they blew his head off.
It wasn’t long after that that he was taken into the Irish mob, the Kelly family taking him in themselves and naming him thusly. He was given a proper education, in addition to continuing his various combat training in hopes that he’d end up a useful member of the organization when he was older. It’s this part of his childhood that he remembers most clearly and fondly.
It was when he was thirteen that he first started manifesting his own peculiar ability, seeing flashes of a girl his own age from time to time, the voices and thoughts becoming more and more clear. These manifestations were erratic and alarming, and seeking some form of solace from them he turned to heroin. The drugs did not actually stop anything, but he was suitably high enough that they didn’t bother him until his use became more and more out of control. Three years after they began, while in the midst of a near overdose and an extremely bad episode, his sister finally just appeared right in front of him.
This blatant and direct contact was enough for them to open the lines of communication. Maximilian sought help for his addiction now that he knew he wasn’t going insane, and they discovered that many of the same techniques he used to fight his cravings were useful for focusing their own predicament into more interesting uses.
Maximilian experimented with their abilities, mostly, in secret, though it was impossible to keep them completely a secret from the family. And as they grew into their new position in their teenage years, they found that their unique traits made them exceptionally effective at removing obstacles to the family. Assault, assassination, theft, when one could appear somewhere and disappear in the blink of an eye the sky was the limit.
Further experimentation, of their abilities and each other, made them a lethally effective team trusted to remove any obstacles to the family’s way of life. They were soon the Kelly clan's most well known Boneman, further being “loaned” to various other Irish families for their own problems and to further the Kelly clan’s own aims.
An interesting situation arising in Philadelphia, however, has brought them to town fresh from removing some problems in DC. And they plan on staying a while,
