Jang-mi Kang

장미 (a.k.a. Jamie)

Although she sometimes simply gets thought of as Zero's main squeeze, Jang-mi is a far more dangerous person than her lack of reputation in Licentia would lead one to believe. Simply blending in with the masses, making no major contributions, Jang-mi always seems to be in the background.   Anyone who knows her of her escapades in the Bay Area knows this is far from the truth, but unlike Zero, she does not crave validation. She knows she's capable and that's all that matters.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Somewhat stocky, Jang-mi doesn't look particularly threatening until you see the look on her face. She keeps herself healthy but does not obsess about her outward appearance. She is the kind of infected who prefers to keep her body the same, unlike those that like to experiment with Xenoexpression, so what makes her stand out is in some ways her ability to not stand out.

Body Features

Jang-mi looks like a non-infected.   She is a bit overweight, but like most people of her ethnicity she carries this weight on her abdomen more so than her limbs, so it's a bit less obvious than Zero's case.   Show Spoiler
Some C-virus infected self harm to sate their bloodlust during times of shortage, and Jang-mi was no exception. Prior to Zero and Watchdog stumbling upon her house, she fed on her own blood. As this happened before getting the Z-virus, some of these scars linger.

Facial Features

Jang-mi is somewhat infamous for her resting bitch face.   Although not very obvious, some acne scars can be seen on her forehead.

Apparel & Accessories

Jang-mi has "a thing" for leather and can usually be seen wearing it in some way or another, almost always in the form of motorcycle jackets.

Specialized Equipment

Usually armed with two 9mm handguns, Jang-mi takes her accuracy very seriously and can retain that accuracy even when using both at once or when under intense pressure.

Mental characteristics

Sexuality

Jang-mi is lesbian and more or less monogamous.

Education

She dropped out of high school but almost immediately began work getting a GED.

Employment

Jang-mi bounced around several jobs in high school, having difficulty with many of them as they often involved customer service. A family friend paid her under the table to grow marijuana for a couple months, which would have been her favorite job had she not been there when the attic she was working in got raided.

Taboos

Jang-mi has HIV. While she is on PrEP and regular treatment, she strongly prefers not to talk about it. As she only sleeps with Zero, she doesn't need to talk about it. (Zero is aware of it and is lucky to have not caught it from her from before Jang-mi started PrEP.)

Personality Characteristics

Savvies & Ineptitudes

She is very good with handguns and can accurately hit targets with single or double hand grips. Her aim is not as good as a sober Jang-mi Kang the Elder, but it is still impressive. Back when she, Zero, and Watchdog were frequently cornered, Jang-mi consistently had the highest body count.

Vices & Personality flaws

Jang-mi has serious trouble with empathy. With the exception of Watchdog, Zero, Zero's children, and her sister, Jang-mi generally cannot bring herself to care when other people get hurt. She is not completely amoral but will sleep just fine at night if she blew someone's brains out.   Sympathy, on the other hand, comes much easier to her.

Social

Religious Views

Jang-mi is atheist and privately thinks religion has done more harm than good in the world. Nevertheless she has made peace with religion's existence and isn't the evangelist sort of atheist.   Her lack of belief in God (or rather, belief in the lack of God) was cemented by the apocalypse.

Speech

Jang-mi has an American accent. English is her first language; she only knows a little bit of Korean and hates it when people assume it's her preferred tongue.

History

The two arrived together in Taqfleck, so almost no one knows how they met, and they're not keen on explaining the blood-soaked story.   When Zero became pregnant, the two broke up. Jang-mi got back together with Zero after the twins were born, mostly out of pity at first. The two were on the rocks for a while, but were rock-solid after the Georgia incident.   They currently live together and are raising Zero's kid's together, something Jang-mi outright refused to do several years ago.   As Zero lost most of her friends and money ran out, stress and distaste for each other's personal failings is pulling them apart. Jang-mi is tired of Zero burning bridges, losing her temper, and losing track of what the household needs. Zero is tired of Jang-mi's aloof nature, increasing bloodlust, and inability to get a job that supports them. (Zero, being undocumented, has more or less given up her job search and sees that as Jang-mi's responsibility.) The two also have different views in parenting, with Jang-mi being more emotionally distant yet also more protective, while Zero is more affectionate yet also hands-off.

Nicknames & Petnames

Through unknown means, Zero has picked up the petname "Fishsticks," to her chagrin.

Relationship Reasoning

Jang-mi knows Zero cannot handle raising the kids alone, and thus the two are together sort of out of obligation. That's not to say Jang-mi doesn't care about Zero at all, but sometimes she isn't sure if what she feels is love.   Zero was previously convinced that they were in love, but now isn't quite so sure. Her faith is greater than that of Jang-mi's though.

Shared Secrets

After Zero was essentially forced out of Licentia after the Xenomorph incident, the two of them went on a crime spree to gather sufficient funds to live independently.   Their current rocky status is hidden from all who ask, although someone might eventually be able to worm it out of Zero. They were never a very publicly affectionate couple, but make an effort to hold their arguments when in front of people who know they are a couple.

History

Although Jang-mi and Zero were the first gays that Kelly personally knew, Kelly, being more involved in Proto-Licentia's administration and therefore being closer to Zero, took Zero's side when the two broke up over Zero getting pregnant. Ever since then, Kelly has slightly resented Jang-mi. This resentment has become toxic as Kelly became obsessed with Zero, but it has recovered partially as she Jang-mi living with Zero and help raise the kids as evidence of "having matured."   Jang-mi just thinks Kelly is batshit.

Nicknames & Petnames

Kelly was introduced to Jang-mi as Jamie and sometimes uses that name by mistake.

Relationship Reasoning

Kelly sees Jang-mi as an unsupportive girlfriend and has occasionally gotten on her case for not "doing enough."
