Session V: I Swear It Was RIGHT HERE Report

General Summary

The Custodes make haste back to the hideout, but make a brief stop at the ruins of Alesia where Ashayet sees a blue fire burning without fuel among the ruined temples. Unsure what the fire might be signifying, they continue onward. They leave it to the better armored legionaries to enter the barrow hideout of Brenno's bandits, and the combat is swift. A woman who had been helping the bandits confirms the rumors of Brenno's somewhat mystical abilities but more importantly is able to tell the Custodes where he will be for the next couple of days. Upon arrival at the fort that Brenno is using as a hideout, the Custodes come up with a plan:

• Ashayet, Aeneas , and Theo will wait outside the gate while Saorise sneaks in.
• Saorise will add some herbs to the bandits' cookfire, making it more caustic and attempt to otherwise sow chaos before opening the gates
• Once the gates have been opened, the accompanying legionaries will enter and take the fort

Saorise is easily able to set a fire and open the gate, then returns to attempt to locate Brenno. Aeneas, meanwhile, sets about loosing the bandits' horses. Like entering her own house, Saorise finds Brenno and kills him in his sleep, but when she takes up his sword everything erupts at once. There's a bright flare with no light to the east, the horses start yelling, the roof of the bandits' sleeping quarters goes up like tinder, and the rest of the Custodes storm the fort with the legionaries. After Saorise demoralizes the bandits from retreating to the round house at the center of the fort for a siege, Ashayet attempts to take possession of Vercingetorix's sword only to discover that it has vanished from Saorise's hands in the fighting. It is nowhere to be found in the camp and the following morning, having returned to Alesia to discover the source of the supernatural phenomenon from the night before, the best that Aeneas can find is that the sword is in waiting somewhere. The Custodes report in to their superiors and are on their way back to Rome when they are intercepted by a message from Merius instructing them to head for the Rhine border.
