Votnuk

In the depths of the Nocturne Empire, lies the massive ribs of a dead carnivorous fish. And with those ribs lays a massive suspended city of coral and sea lichen and a sea of underwater blossoms.

Life amongst death, the cycle of existence bred in a multitude of colour surrounded by the corpse of the beast.

While most Nocturne settlements can hardly be called cities, Votnuk does not fail that distinction. With its sprawling kelp markets, and the sleeping pods and coral farms of the Nightbloom that live in the caress of the eternal remains, Votnuk is one of the largest settlements under the waves.

Demographics

Votnuk is a Nightbloom only settlement, with the bonded plants rooted all around the city, of which many varieties make up the massive underwater gardens of the city. Coral farms and those massive mollusk-like sleeping pods make up the rest of the bonded organisms, with those few lucky enough to be bonded to the anemone that protect the city taking a place of unconquerable honour.

Government

Votnuk is but a vassal to the larger Nocturne whole, its government a local public servant - the Ribtoller, whose task it is to keep the peace and guide the growth of the city slowly down the corpse of the ancient predator.
Notable Ribtollers have had hunting parties seek out relatives to the species that form their great city, but bringing in more corpses has only ever resulted into damage to the city as the wandering anemone defenders carve through the cities they defend in unholy zeal.

History

One of the more notable moments of Votnuk was the seeding. Votnuk was less organically created and more a mixing of a mass planting of underwater plants, and a laying of thousands of fertilised Nightbloom eggs a collectable sea of potential in the still rotting carcass of the predator, both actions hoping to quickly develop a population that could be guided by inserted elders, so that the Empire could put pressure on a whisperling population that was ready to rebel. Whisperlings do prefer solidarity when able and the mixed community of the Empire was showing those in the area that the Nightbloom were unlikely to tend to their needs - so the Empire needed bodies and influence.

Oh I love this idea of building and growth around a corpse. I am imagining the whales that fall to the ocean floor and the flurry of life that comes from that dead. This is such a beautiful and melancholic place. I love that there is still evidence of the creature that died here. I also liked the political nature of the creation, gives a lot of room for really interesting story telling. Brilliant!
